  1. 1. Energy analysis for sustainable mega-cities

    Author : Aumnad Phdungsilp; Björn Palm; Ivo Martinac; Charles Heaps; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Asian mega-cities; energy demand; metabolism of cities; energy modeling; sustainable energy; energy planning; multi-criteria decision-making; Mechanical energy engineering; Mekanisk energiteknik;

    Abstract : ABSTRACT Cities throughout Asia have experienced unprecedented economic development over the past decades. In many cases this has contributed to their rapid and uncontrolled growth, which has resulted in a multiplicity of problems, including rapid population increase, enhanced environmental pollution, collapsing traffic systems, dysfunctional waste management, and rapid increases in the consumption of energy, water and other resources. 2. 2. Energy Use, Efficiency Gains and Emission Abatement in Transitional Industrialised Economies: Poland and the Baltic States

    Author : Jürgen Salay; Miljö- och energisystem; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; implementation; sustainable energy; renewable energy; electricity production; power industry; Baltic states; Poland; transition; sulphur dioxide; air pollution; energy efficiency; Energy; energy use; Environmental technology; pollution control; Miljöteknik; kontroll av utsläpp; Energy research; Energiforskning;

    Abstract : This thesis is a study of how energy use and air pollution in Poland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have been affected by the economic transition after 1989. It consists of six articles, which examine three different aspects of these changes. READ MORE

    Abstract : In the transition towards a sustainable energy system, building mounted solar photovoltaics (PV) have unique benefits; they require no additional land and the energy is generated directly at load centers. Within residential buildings, multi-family homes (MFH) are particularly interesting because of the economies of scale and their greater potential for emissions reductions. READ MORE

  4. 4. Investigation into sustainable energy systems in Nordic municipalities

    Author : Robert Fischer; Andrea Toffolo; Erik Elfgren; Danica Djuric Ilic; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Renewable energy sources; Nordic municipalities; municipal energy system; electrified transport; biofuels; multi-objective optimization; EnergyPLAN; Energiteknik; Energy Engineering;

    Abstract : Municipal energy systems in Nordic environments face multiple challenges: the cold climate, large-scale industries, a high share of electric heating and long distances drive energy consumption. While actions on the demand side minimize energy use, decarbonization efforts in mining, industries, the heating and the transport sector can increase the consumption of electricity and biofuels. 5. 5. Towards sustainable energy consumption : Electricity demand flexibility and household fuel choice

    Author : Aemiro Melkamu Daniel; Lars Persson; Runar Brännlund; Rauli Svento; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Choice experiment; demand flexibility; electricity contract; fuel choice; fuel stacking; household heterogeneity; load control; pro-environmental framing; willingness-to-accept;

    Abstract : Paper [I] investigates household heterogeneity in valuing electricity contract attributes that include various load controls and information sharing to induce demand flexibility. Using a stated preference choice experiment conducted with Swedish households, this paper shows that, although a large proportion of households ask for substantial compensation, some households are willing to share their electricity consumption information and require relatively lower compensation to allow load controls.
