  2. 2. Finite Element Modeling of the Human Head

    Author : Svein Kleiven; KTH; []
    Keywords : Finite element method FEM ; Human head; brain; head injury; epidemiology; statistics; simulations.;

    Abstract : The main objectives of the present thesis were to define the dimension of head injuries in Sweden over a longer period and to present a Finite Element (FE) model of the human head which can be used for preventive strategies in the future. The annual incidence of head injuries in Sweden between 1987 and 2000 was defined at over 22 000, cases most of which were mild head injuries. READ MORE

  3. 3. Numerical Accident Reconstructions : A Biomechanical Tool to Understand and Prevent Head Injuries

    Author : Madelen Fahlstedt; Svein Kleiven; Peter Halldin; Michael Gilchrist; KTH; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Head injuries; Accident Reconstruction; Finite element analysis; Injury prevention; Helmet; Cyclist; Pedestrian; Epidemiology; Applied Medical Technology; Tillämpad medicinsk teknik;

    Abstract : Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are a major health and socioeconomic problem throughout the world, with an estimated 10 million deaths and instances of hospitalization annually. Numerical methods such as finite element (FE) methods can be used to study head injuries and optimize the protection, which can lead to a decrease in the number of injuries. READ MORE

  4. 4. Development of an Anisotropic Finite Element Head Model for Traumatic Brain Injury Prediction

    Author : Chiara Giordano; Svein Kleiven; Songbai Ji; KTH; []
    Keywords : Axonal Strain; Brain Anisotropy; Traumatic Brain Injury; Finite Element Analysis; Brain Tissue; Constitutive Modeling.; Medical Technology; Medicinsk teknologi;

    Abstract : Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a worldwide health care problem with very high associatedmorbidity and mortality rates. In particular, the diagnosis of TBI is challenging: symptomsoverlap with other pathologies and the injury is typically not visible with conventionalneuroimaging techniques. READ MORE

  5. 5. Generation of Patient Specific Finite Element Head Models

    Author : Johnson Ho; Svein Kleiven; Michael Gilchrist; KTH; []
    Keywords : Injury Prevention; Patient Specific; Finite Element Head Model; Anatomical Structures; TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIKVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a great burden for the society worldwide and the statisticsindicates a relative constant total annual rate of TBI. It seems that the present preventativestrategies are not sufficient. To be able to develop head safety measures against accidents ine.g. READ MORE
