1. Leaching and Transformation of Flame Retardants and Plasticizers under Simulated Landfill Conditions
Abstract : Many products used in our everyday life contain chemicals added to give them specific properties. Flame retardants (FRs) are added to prevent or retard fires in textiles, plastics etc., while plasticizers are supplied to make plastics more flexible. READ MORE

2. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers and Tetrabromobisphenol A : Chemical synthesis, X-ray crystallography and Photochemical degradation
Abstract : In the 1960s’ several manmade chemicals were detected in the environment, far from their sources. The most well known, and most likely those with the largest impact on the society, were DDT and its related compounds, and PCBs. These anthropogenic compounds were characterised as persistent organic pollutants (POPs). READ MORE

3. Occupational and dietary exposure to organohalogen substances, with special emphasis on polybrominated diphenyl ethers
Abstract : This thesis is aimed at widening the current knowledge base about human exposure to brominated flame retardants (BFRs), particularly polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA). Data on exposures to some of the traditional organohalogen substances (OHS) have been included for comparative reasons. READ MORE

4. New methods for determination of airborne pollutants : Focus on tetrabromobisphenol A, organophosphate triesters and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons
Abstract : The work presented in this thesis concerns the development and evaluation of new methods of sampling and analysis of organic pollutants in the indoor and outdoor environment. In Paper I, the development of a new method was reported for the determination of the brominated flame retardant tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) in air using sampling with glass fiber filter and polyurethane foam (PUF), ultrasonic solvent extraction and liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry (LC-ESI/MS). 5. Persistency, bioaccumulation and toxicity assessment of selected brominated flame retardants
Abstract : Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are chemicals used in e.g. electronic equipment, textiles and plastics for the prevention of fire. Over recent decades, concern has been raised regarding some heavily used BFRs, since the levels in the environment have been increasing. READ MORE
