  1. 1. Targeting the prostate tumor microenvironment and vasculature : the role of castration, tumor-associated macrophages and pigment epithelium-derived factor

    Author : Sofia Halin; Anders Bergh; Pernilla Wikström; Stina Rudolfsson; Carl-Henrik Heldin; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Prostate cancer; angiogenesis; castration therapy; microenvironment; stroma; tumor-associated macrophages; pigment epithelium-derived factor; PEDF; vasculature; Pathology; Patologi; patologi; Pathology;

    Abstract : BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among Swedish men. For patients with metastatic prostate cancer the standard therapy is castration, a treatment that initially provides symptomatic relief but unfortunately is not curative. New therapeutic targets for advanced prostate cancer are therefore needed. READ MORE

  2. 2. TNF-α and neurotrophins in Achilles tendinosis

    Author : Johan Bagge; Sture Forsgren; Tomas Movin; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Achilles tendon; tendinosis; tendinopathy; neurotrophins; TNF-alpha; physical acitivity; apoptosis; proliferation; pain; remodelling; anatomi; Human Anatomy;

    Abstract : Tenocytes are the principal cells of the human Achilles tendon. In tendinosis, changes in the metabolism and morphology of these cells occur. Neurotrophins are growth factors essential for the development of the nervous system. READ MORE

  3. 3. Monocytes, Tissue Factor and Heparin-coated Surfaces : Clinical and Experimental Studies

    Author : Matilda Johnell; Agneta Siegbahn; Rolf Larsson; Jesper Swedenborg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicine; monocytes; tissue factor; heparin-coated surfaces; coagulation; inflammation; thrombin; cytokines; cardiopulmonary bypass; biocompatibility; migration; chemotaxis; Medicin; Dermatology and venerology; clinical genetics; internal medicine; Dermatologi och venerologi; klinisk genetik; invärtesmedicin;

    Abstract : Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is associated with inflammatory response and activation of coagulation. Heparin coating of the CPB circuit is shown to improve the biocompatibility of the surface. The biological effects of a new heparin surface, the Corline Heparin Surface (CHS), prepared according to a new principle, have been studied. READ MORE

  4. 4. Hormonal regulation of liver and tumor growth

    Author : Ville Wallenius; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Liver; cytokine; interleukin-6; tumor necrosis factor; primary liver growth promoter; cyproterone acetate; nafenopin; hepatocyte growth factor; HGF receptor; tumor; sarcoma; N-terminal; truncated;

    Abstract : The aims of this thesis were to investigate the regulatory functions of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-a) on liver growth, and the importance of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and the HGF receptor (Met) for growth of mesenchyme-derived tumors. The studies on different types of liver growth, measured as weight, DNA and protein content, and DNA synthesis, were performed on mice lacking the IL-6 or the TNF receptor-1 gene back-crossed to the C57bl/6 strain. 5. 5. Leukocyte sequestration associated with inflammation : mechanisms and modulations

    Author : Kristina Nyhlén; Åke Ryrfeldt; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Inflammationsreaktionen är kroppens första försvar mot främmande partiklar t ex bakterier. Det är en komplex reaktion som bl a karakteriseras av att vita blodkroppar dras till det inflammerade området och att vätskao i blodet lättare tar sig igenom kärlväggen till vävnaden dvs det svullnar.
