  1. 1. Exceptional fossil preservation: implications for palaeobiology and taphonomy

    Author : Miriam Heingård; Berggrundsgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; exceptional preservation; molecular palaeontology; palaeobiology; taphonomy; braincase; cuticle; fish larvae; Fur Formation; Stolleklint Clay; melanin; systematics;

    Abstract : Although fossils are relatively common in some sedimentary deposits, the majority consists of fragmented or distorted skeletal hard parts (such as shell and bones). However, in rare cases, special burial and diagenetic conditions have allowed a greater portion of the original anatomy to be incorporated into the fossil record. READ MORE

  2. 2. Bad Death at Sandby borg : A Bioarchaeological Analysis of Intergroup Violence and Postmortem Agency of Unburied Corpses

    Author : Clara Alfsdotter; Anders Högberg; Alison Klevnäs; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Sandby borg; Migration period; Iron age; Massacre; Mass violence; Conflict; Unburied corpses; Postmortem agency; Taphonomy; Archaeothanatology; Forensic taphonomy; Trauma; Öland; Treatment of corpses; Folkvandringstid; järnålder; Öland; obegravda kroppar; våld; massaker; politiseing av lik; tafonomi; arkeothanatologi; Humaniora; Humanities; Archaeology; Arkeologi;

    Abstract : The subject of corpses from mass violence is surprisingly unexplored, even though the materiality of the corpse carries strong symbolic capital in conflicts. The aim of my PhD research is to create new knowledge about the implications of unburied corpses that stem from intergroup conflicts, and subsequently to add knowledge concerning how intergroup violence is organised to achieve desired social agendas. 3. 3. Forensic taphonomy in an indoor setting : Implications for estimation of the post-mortem interval

    Author : Ann-Sofie Ceciliason; Ingemar Thiblin; Håkan Sandler; M. Gunnar Andersson; Anders Lindström; Niels Lynnerup; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Forensic taphonomy; Indoor setting; Post-mortem interval estimation; Hepatic decomposition score; Total body score; microbial neoformation; Rättsmedicin; Forensic Medicine;

    Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis was to determine if and how taphonomic data can be used to expand our knowledge concerning the decompositional process in an indoor setting, as well as adapting scoring-based methods for quantification of human decomposition, to increase the precision of post-mortem interval (PMI) estimates.In the first paper, the established methods of Total Body Score (TBS) and Accumulated Degree-Days (ADD) were investigated in an indoor setting, with results indicating a fairly low precision. 4. 4. Preservation of Marine Reptile Soft Parts: Reconstructing the Life and Death of Ancient Leviathans

    Author : Randolph De La Garza; Berggrundsgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular paleontology; Taphonomy; Soft-tissues; Lagerstätten; Skin; Sea Turtle; Ichthyosaur; Fur Formation; Posidonia Shale; Paleobiology; Marine Reptiles;

    Abstract : Marine reptiles constitute a diverse group of secondarily aquatic tetrapods that have inhabited the world’s oceans for the greater part of the last 250 million years. While certain large-scale anatomical changes have been observed through progressive alterations of their skeletal morphology (e.g. READ MORE

  5. 5. Animals and Humans : Human-animal interaction in northern Sweden during the late glacial and postglacial time

    Author : Therese Ekholm; Sabine Sten; Carl-Gösta Ojala; Ola Magnell; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Mesolithic; fauna; radiocarbon dating; northern Sweden; calcined bones; pioneers; hunter-gatherers; zooarchaeology; lithic technology; taphonomy; 8.2 k BP cold event; prey.; Archaeology; Arkeologi;

    Abstract : When the last remnant of the Weichsel glacier melted in northern Sweden, around 7000 BC, pioneer settlers entered virgin land, following their prey, which in turn followed the vegetation dispersion. Some of the settlers derived from the east and the northeast and spread from the Russian taiga, through Finland and into northern Sweden, the study area for this thesis. READ MORE
