  1. 1. Negotiating 'Culture', Assembling a Past: the Visual, the Non-Visual and the Voice of the Silent Actant

    Author : Jonathan Westin; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Techniques of visual representation; visualisation; limitation; audience; museum; exhibition; technology; interactivity;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis is to describe and analyse the processes surrounding the creation of a scientific visual representation, where, both in the practical creation of this visualisation and in the way it is communicated, those actants which amount to what we call ‘culture’ or cultural value, are enrolled or ignored. Trying to answer if a broader set of non-visual cultural properties can be identified and their influence described, and if history can be visualised without displacing our knowledge of the past in favour of a popular representation thereof, I trace the interaction between client, artist, technology and target audience. 2. 2. On the use of visualisation tools in product design : exploring possibilities and problems of virtual reality techniques

    Author : Per Johansson; Simon Richir; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIKVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : The research presented in this thesis has its base in product development methodology and examines product representations and visual displays as tools for product design. New visualisation technologies, such as VR, has entered the market, but unfortunately, questions of usability and accessibility for the designer are often set aside in favour of development of the technology itself. 3. 3. When, Where and What : The Development of Perceived Spatio-Temporal Continuity

    Author : Olga Kochukhova; Claes Von Hofsten; Richard Aslin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Psychology; infants; occlusion; incomplete visual information; saccadic gaze shifts; smooth pursuit; temporal; spatial; object representation; learning; extrapolation; Psykologi;

    Abstract : This thesis explored the development of infants’ ability to preserve spatio-temporal continuity of moving objects in situations where they disappeared completely (Study I & II) or partially (Study III) behind other objects (occluders). We recorded infants gaze direction with the help of two different techniques: 1) infants’ gaze shifts in Study I were measured with electro-oculogram (EOG) in combination with a motion analyzing system (Qualisys) that recorded the reflected infrared light from markers placed on the infant’s head and the moving object; 2) in Studies II and III a cornea reflection eye tracker was used (Tobii 1750) . 4. 4. Representation Learning and Information Fusion : Applications in Biomedical Image Processing

    Author : Elisabeth Wetzer; Nataša Sladoje; Fred Hamprecht; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Representation Learning; Texture Descriptors; Equivariant Neural Networks; Contrastive Learning; Image Classification; Image Registration; Image Retrieval; Digital Pathology; Computerized Image Processing; Datoriserad bildbehandling;

    Abstract : In recent years Machine Learning and in particular Deep Learning have excelled in object recognition and classification tasks in computer vision. As these methods extract features from the data itself by learning features that are relevant for a particular task, a key aspect of this remarkable success is the amount of data on which these methods train. 5. 5. Picturing Dissolving Views : August Strindberg and the Visual Media of His Age

    Author : Vreni Hockenjos; Astrid Söderbergh-Widding; Stephan Michael Schröder; Sara Danius; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; August Strindberg; media history; 1870–1912; visual culture; media in literature; Sweden; early cinema; magic lantern; panorama; instantaneous photography; graphic reproduction; theatre; science; perception; Film; Filmvetenskap; Cinema Studies; filmvetenskap;

    Abstract : The subject of this study is August Strindberg’s interaction with the visual media of his day. Its dual aim is to examine Strindberg’s work in the light of media history and to allow Strindberg’s work in turn to illuminate the media history of the fin de siècle. READ MORE
