1. Immunopathogenesis of schistosomiasis mansoni : Immunity and pathology in a primary and a secondary infection following chemotherapy in the mouse and the baboo models
Abstract : This thesis describes a series of experiments aimed at elucidating the mechanisms ofimmunity and pathology elicited by both a primary infection and a reinfection exposure toSchistosoma mansoni following chemotherapy. The effects of a single large cercarial doseand a cumulatively equivalent dose, administered as multiple small doses are compared. READ MORE

2. Specific and nonspecific immune mechanisms in human gut : a comparative study of normal and ulcerative colitis intestine
Abstract : The intestine, with its large mucosal surface area, digests and absorbs food nutrients and maintains a beneficial microbial flora in the colon. Local protective immune responses against intestinal pathogens ensure the survival of the individual. These immune reactions are both specific and non-specific in nature. READ MORE

3. Systemic sclerosis : vascular, pulmonary and immunological aspects
Abstract : In systemic sclerosis (SSc), interstitial lung disease (ILD) and engagement of the vascular system lead to increased morbidity and mortality. The aim of this thesis was to elucidate, in a consecutively included cohort of SSc (limited and diffuse) patients (n = 33), the T cell cytokine profile driving the disease in ILD and to explore the role of matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) and its inhibitor: tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1) in the extracellular matrix (ECM) degrading process leading to fibrous scarring and honey combing. 4. Aspects of the Pre-Diabetic Period in Type 1 Diabetes
Abstract : Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease characterized by insulin deficiency, due to immune-mediated destruction of beta cells. Current knowledge regarding the period preceding disease onset comes, to a large extent, from studying risk cohorts based on relatives of T1D-patients, as they have an increased disease risk. 5. Mercury-induced autoimmunity : Genetics and immunoregulation
Abstract : The existence of immune self-tolerance allows the immune system to mount responses against infectious agents, but not against self-molecular constitutes. Although self-tolerance is a robust phenomenon, in some individuals as well as in experimental models, the self-tolerance breaks down and as a result, a self-destructive autoimmune disease emerges.
