1. Genital tract CD4+ T cells for vaccination and protection against Chlamydia trachomatis
Abstract : Vaccination strategies for protection against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are lacking due to an incomplete understanding of genital tract T cell responses. This thesis dissects the generation of T helper subsets, including the recently discovered Th17 subset, during genital tract infection with a common sexually transmitted pathogen, Chlamydia trachomatis, and addresses vaccine requirements for the generation of genital tract CD4+ T cell immunity. 2. Effect of thimerosal on the murine immune system : especially induction of systemic autoimmunity
Abstract : The organic mercury compound ethylmercurithiosalicylate (thimerosal), an antiseptic and a preservative, has recently raised public health concern due to its presence in vaccines globally. Thimerosal dissociates in the body to thiosalicylate and ethyl mercury (EtHg), which is partly converted to inorganic mercuric mercury (Hg2+). READ MORE

3. Mechanistic studies of the adjuvant effects of CTA1-DD and the native cholera toxin: Impact of cell targeting and tissue localization
Abstract : Vaccines are the most effective means of preventing infectious diseases and improving global health. However, few vaccines have successfully been developed for protection at mucosal surfaces where most pathogens gain access. READ MORE

4. Immunopathogenesis of schistosomiasis mansoni : Immunity and pathology in a primary and a secondary infection following chemotherapy in the mouse and the baboo models
Abstract : This thesis describes a series of experiments aimed at elucidating the mechanisms ofimmunity and pathology elicited by both a primary infection and a reinfection exposure toSchistosoma mansoni following chemotherapy. The effects of a single large cercarial doseand a cumulatively equivalent dose, administered as multiple small doses are compared. READ MORE

5. Immune modulation in serous epithelial ovarian cancer : focus on the role of tumor-derived exosomes
Abstract : Serous epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is a potent suppressor of the immune defense. Here, we studied interactions between EOC and the immune system that lead to escape from tumor immune surveillance. READ MORE
