  1. 1. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy in muscle-invasive urinary bladder cancer : studies on treatment response, tumor draining lymph nodes and blood transfusion

    Author : Robert Rosenblatt; Amir Sherif; Ola Winqvist; Per Marits; Ralph Peeker; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; bladder cancer; neoadjuvant chemotherapy; tumor downstaging; sentinel nodes; blood transfusion; Urology; kirurgi; särskilt urologi; Medicine; medicin;

    Abstract : Muscle-invasive urinary bladder cancer is a deadly disease. Mortality rates remained unchanged for decades despite radical surgery.After several randomized trials, we today know that cisplatin based chemotherapy given prior to cystectomy, improves survival for every tenth patient. 2. 2. Towards a detailed understanding of the red blood cell storage lesion : and its consequences for in vivo survival following transfusion

    Author : Andreas Hult; Christer Malm; Per-Arne Oldenborg; Martin L. Olsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Red blood cell; erythrocyte; transfusion; macrophage; phagocytosis; storage lesion; eryptosis; Class A scavenger receptor; transfusion medicine; transfusionsmedicin;

    Abstract : Red blood cells (RBCs) are vital for oxygen delivery to tissues and constitute the vast majority of all cells in blood. After leaving the red bone marrow as mature cells, RBCs have a lifespan of approximately 120 days before they are removed from the circulation by macrophages, mainly in the spleen and liver. 3. 3. Clinical Aspects of Bleeding and Transfusion in Cardiac Surgery

    Author : Lisa Ternström; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cardiac surgery; bleeding; fibrinogen; blood transfusion; transfusion guidelines; adherence;

    Abstract : Abstract Excessive bleeding after cardiac surgery is a serious complication that is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. The bleeding is multifactorial and influenced by both surgical factors and impaired haemostasis. READ MORE

  4. 4. Bioinformatic studies of genetic variation at known, novel and candidate blood group loci

    Author : Magnus Jöud; Avdelningen för hematologi och transfusionsmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; bioinformatics; blood groups; glycosyltransferases; transfusion medicine;

    Abstract : Access to compatible blood for transfusion is a prerequisite for modern health care. The compatibility is limited by the presence of antibodies to blood group antigens, polymorphic protein and carbohydrate structures, on the surface of the red blood cell. Blood group antigens arise from genetic variation in the genes underlying their expression. READ MORE

  5. 5. On Quality Improvement in Gynaecological Cancer Surgery

    Author : Evelyn Serreyn Lundin; Preben Kjölhede; Ninnie Borendal Wodlin; Lena Nilsson; Ignace Vergote; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Objectives: The overall purpose of this thesis was to find medical and surgical treatment methods of improving the perioperative care of gynaecological cancer patients. The specific objectives were to determine whether a single dose tranexamic acid given immediately before surgery for presumed advanced ovarian cancer reduces perioperative blood loss and the need for blood transfusions, and to determine whether postoperative recovery, tissue damage, and inflammatory response markers differ between women operated with robotic and abdominal hysterectomy for low-risk endometrial cancer in an enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) programme, and to evaluate costs for hospital stay and postoperative recovery in relation to health impact.
