1. Palladium-catalyzed lignin valorization : Towards a lignin-based biorefinery
Abstract : The work described in this thesis focuses on the cleavage of the β-O-4′ bond, which is the most abundant interunit linkage in the lignin polymer. In the first part, three methods based on palladium catalysis have been developed and their applicability has been verified using lignin model compounds. 2. New Methods for the Synthesis of Vicinal Stereocenters : Palladium-Catalyzed Domino Reactions and Asymmetric Transfer Hydrogenation
Abstract : In this thesis the synthesis of vicinal stereocenters is investigated in two distinct contexts, namely the construction of 3,3-disubstituted oxindoles and the synthesis of b-hydroxy-a-amino acids. Both scaffolds are prevalent in a range of natural products and biologically relevant compounds and, therefore, methods for their synthesis are of great import. READ MORE

3. Palladium-catalyzed aromatic coupling and allylic substitution
Abstract : Different types of palladium(II)-catalyzed aromatic couplingreactions have been investigated. The cyclization of diphenyl ether was found to be moresensitive to reaction conditions than was the cyclization ofthe diphenylamine derivatives. READ MORE

4. Palladium-Catalyzed Synthesis and Transformations of Organometallic Compounds
Abstract : This thesis is focused on two important fields of palladium catalysis: the development of electrophilic allylic substitution reactions via bis-allylpalladium intermediates; and application of palladium pincer-complexes in the synthesis and transformations of organometallic compounds.Palladium-catalyzed electrophilic allylation of aldehyde and imine substrates could be achieved using readily available allyl chlorides and acetates by employing hexamethylditin or bis(pinacolato)diboron reagents. 5. Palladium-Catalyzed Carbocyclizations of Allenes with Unsaturated Hydrocarbons
Abstract : Palladium-catalyzed reactions of unsaturated hydrocarbons are important processes in organic chemistry especially for the generation of ring systems. This thesis describes the development and mechanistic studies of carbocyclization reactions of allenes with olefins, allyls or 1,3-dienes catalyzed by palladium(0)- and palladium(II)-complexes.
