1. Carbide and MAX-Phase Engineering by Thin Film Synthesis
Abstract : This thesis reports on the development of low-temperature processes for transition metal carbide and MAX-phase thin film growth. Magnetron sputtering and evaporation, far from thermodynamical equilibrium, have been utilised to engineer the properties of the films by physical and chemical control. READ MORE

2. Ti3SiC2 synthesis by powder metallurgical methods
Abstract : The MAX phases constitute a group of ternary ceramics which has received intense attention over the last decade due to their unique combination of properties. The Ti3SiC2 is the most well studied MAX phase to date and it has turned out to be a promising candidate for high temperature applications. READ MORE

3. Ti3SiC2 synthesis from TiC and Si powders
Abstract : The aim of this work was to produce Ti3SiC2 from TiC and Si powders and to investigate process parameters with respect to optimised Ti3SiC2 yield. The reaction pathway of Ti3SiC2 formation and the thermochemical degradation reactions were examined. READ MORE

4. Multifunctional nanostructured Ti-Si-C thin films
Abstract : In this Thesis, I have investigated multifunctional nanostructured Ti-Si-C thin films synthesized by magnetron sputtering in the substrate-temperature range from room temperature to 900 °C. The studies cover high-temperature growth of Ti3SiC2 and Ti4SiC3, low-temperature growth of Ti-Si-C nanocomposites, and Ti-Si-C-based multi¬layers, as well as their electrical, mechanical, and thermal-stability properties. 5. Novel Layered and 2D Materials for Functionality Enhancement of Contacts and Gas Sensors
Abstract : Chemical gas sensors are widely-used electronic devices for detecting or measuring the density levels of desired gas species. In this study, materials with established or potential applications for gas sensors are treated. READ MORE
