  1. 1. Experimental and Numerical Investigations of Ultra-Cold Atoms

    Author : Magnus Rehn; Anders Kastberg; Claude Dion; Matti Kaivola; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ultracold atoms; optical lattices; Bose-Einstein condensation; quantum phase transitions; Physics; Fysik;

    Abstract : I have been one of the main responsible for building a new laboratory for Bose-Einstein condensation with 87Rb. In particular, the experimental setup has been designed for performing experiments with Bose-Einstein condensates load into optical lattices of variable geometries. All parts essential for Bose-Einstein condensation are in place. READ MORE

  2. 2. Atomic transport in optical lattices

    Author : Henning Hagman; Claude Dion; Daniel Comparat; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : Ultra-cold atoms; optical lattice; laser cooling; directed transport; Brownian motor; Brownian motion;

    Abstract : This thesis includes both experimental and theoretical investigations of fluctuation-induced transport phenomena, presented in a series of nine papers, by studies of the dynamics of cold atoms in dissipative optical lattices. With standard laser cooling techniques about 108 cesium atoms are accumulated, cooled to a few μK, and transferred into a dissipative optical lattice. READ MORE

  3. 3. Quantum Few-Body Physics with the Configuration Interaction Approach: Method Development and Application to Physical Systems

    Author : Jonas Cremon; Matematisk fysik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Tonks-Girardeau gas; vortices; Bose-Einstein condensation; quantum many-particle physics; quantum few-particle physics; Lee-Suzuki approximation; configuration interaction method; Wigner localization; quantum dots; ultra-cold gases; Fysicumarkivet A:2010:Cremon;

    Abstract : This dissertation, based on six included papers, theoretically investigates properties of quantum few-particle systems. An overview of related experimental research - ultra-cold trapped dilute gases, and electrons in quantum dots - is given, followed by a description of some of the studied many-particle phenomena - Bose-Einstein condensation, quantized vortices, Wigner localization and the Tonks-Girardeau gas. 4. 4. Extended Jaynes-Cummings Models In Cavity Qed

    Author : Jonas Larson; Stig Stenholm; Peter L. Knight; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physical chemistry; Optics; Optics; Optik;

    Abstract : Due to the improvement within cavity quantum electrodynamics experiments during the last decades, what was former seen as 'toy models' are today realized in laboratories. A controlled isolated coherent evolution of one or a few atoms coupled to a single mode inside a cavity is achievable. READ MORE

  5. 5. A quantum for a quantum : Quantum simulators in exotic lattices

    Author : Pil Maria Saugmann; Jonas Larson; André Eckardt; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; quantum physics; condensed matter physics; quantum optics; optical lattices. Fock state lattices; exotic lattices; frustration; Theoretical Physics; teoretisk fysik;

    Abstract : This thesis centers on how to use exotic lattices in different ways to design potential quantum simulators. These exotic lattices are either real physical objects in the form of ultra cold atoms in  bipartite optical lattice systems or lattice models revealed in state space. READ MORE
