  1. 1. Electron-scale physics in space plasma : Thin boundaries and magnetic reconnection

    Author : Cecilia Norgren; Mats André; Jonathan Eastwood; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Most of the observable Universe consists of plasma, a kind of ionized gas that interacts with electric and magnetic fields. Large volumes of space are filled with relatively uniform plasmas that convect with the magnetic field. READ MORE

  2. 2. Solitary waves and enhanced incoherent scatter ion lines

    Author : Jonas Ekeberg; Lars Eliasson; Kristof Stasiewicz; Jan Trulsen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; plasma waves and instabilities; nonlinear phenomena; solitons and solitary waves; ionosphere; Sun: corona; incoherent scatter radar; MHD; plasmavågor och instabiliteter; ickelinjära fenomen; solitoner och solitära vågor; jonosfär; solen: korona; inkoherent spridningsradar; MHD; Geocosmophysics and plasma physics; Geokosmofysik och plasmafysik; Space physics; Rymdfysik; Plasma physics; Plasmafysik; Non-linear dynamics; chaos; Icke-linjär dynamik; kaos; fysik; Physics; rymd- och plasmafysik; Space and Plasma Physics;

    Abstract : This thesis addresses solitary waves and their significance for auroral particle acceleration, coronal heating and incoherent scatter radar spectra. Solitary waves are formed due to a balance of nonlinear and dispersive effects. READ MORE

  3. 3. VLF and ULF Waves Associated with Magnetospheric Substorms

    Author : Andrew Collier; Lars Blomberg; James McKenzie; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Space physics; Subtorms; Magnetosphere; VLF waves; ULF waves; Space physics; Rymdfysik;

    Abstract : A magnetospheric substorm is manifested in a variety of phenomena observed both in space and on the ground. Two electromagnetic signatures are the Substorm Chorus Event (SCE) and Pi2 pulsations. The SCE is a Very Low Frequency (VLF) radio phenomenon observed on the ground after the onset of the substorm expansion phase. READ MORE

  4. 4. Navigating towards the Safe Operating Space: Systems thinking and the SDGs

    Author : David Collste; Sarah E Cornell; Birgit Kopainsky; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; 2030 Agenda; visioning; scenarios; Sustainable Development Goals; SDGs; Three horizons; transformation; The World In 2050; Planetary Boundaries; Safe Operating Space; Plural economics; Doughnut Economics; Human Needs; Capability approach; Easterlin paradox; Sustainability; System Dynamics; Sustainability Science; vetenskap om hållbar utveckling;

    Abstract : Can the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals be reached within the Planetary Boundaries? This licentiate thesis aims to explore this question by navigating towards the safe operating space, as defined by the planetary boundaries, through integrating issues, disciplines, scales, models and stakeholders. The thesis is a milestone within the European Union financed project “Adaptation to a New Economic Reality (AdaptEconII)”. READ MORE

  5. 5. Experimental studies of materials migration in magnetic confinement fusion devices : Novel methods for measurement of macro particle migration, transport of atomic impurities and characterization of exposed surfaces

    Author : Igor Bykov; Henric Bergsåker; Matej Mayer; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; fusion; tokamak; RFP; divertor; limiter; SOL; transport; migration; surface analysis; IBA; ion micro beam; beryllium; tritium; Physics; Fysik;

    Abstract : During several decades of research and development in the field of Magnetically Confined Fusion (MCF) the preferred selection of materials for Plasma Facing Components (PFC) has changed repeatedly. Without doubt, endurance of the first wall will decide research availability and lifespan of the first International Thermonuclear Research Reactor (ITER). READ MORE
