1. Electron-scale physics in space plasma : Thin boundaries and magnetic reconnection
Abstract : Most of the observable Universe consists of plasma, a kind of ionized gas that interacts with electric and magnetic fields. Large volumes of space are filled with relatively uniform plasmas that convect with the magnetic field. READ MORE

2. Solitary waves and enhanced incoherent scatter ion lines
Abstract : This thesis addresses solitary waves and their significance for auroral particle acceleration, coronal heating and incoherent scatter radar spectra. Solitary waves are formed due to a balance of nonlinear and dispersive effects. READ MORE

3. VLF and ULF Waves Associated with Magnetospheric Substorms
Abstract : A magnetospheric substorm is manifested in a variety of phenomena observed both in space and on the ground. Two electromagnetic signatures are the Substorm Chorus Event (SCE) and Pi2 pulsations. The SCE is a Very Low Frequency (VLF) radio phenomenon observed on the ground after the onset of the substorm expansion phase. READ MORE

4. Navigating towards the Safe Operating Space: Systems thinking and the SDGs
Abstract : Can the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals be reached within the Planetary Boundaries? This licentiate thesis aims to explore this question by navigating towards the safe operating space, as defined by the planetary boundaries, through integrating issues, disciplines, scales, models and stakeholders. The thesis is a milestone within the European Union financed project “Adaptation to a New Economic Reality (AdaptEconII)”. READ MORE

5. Experimental studies of materials migration in magnetic confinement fusion devices : Novel methods for measurement of macro particle migration, transport of atomic impurities and characterization of exposed surfaces
Abstract : During several decades of research and development in the field of Magnetically Confined Fusion (MCF) the preferred selection of materials for Plasma Facing Components (PFC) has changed repeatedly. Without doubt, endurance of the first wall will decide research availability and lifespan of the first International Thermonuclear Research Reactor (ITER). READ MORE
