  1. 1. Vertebral Deformity and Vertebral Fracture in the Elderly

    Author : Ralph Hasserius; Ortopedi - klinisk och molekylär osteoporosforskning; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; orthopaedics; traumatology; Kirurgi; ortopedi; traumatologi; Surgery; Hip fracture; Morbidity; Mortality; Prediction; Non-participants; Prevalence; Osteoporosis; Vertebral deformity; Vertebral fracture;

    Abstract : Osteoporosis is a systemic, skeletal disease with the consequence of an increased risk of sustaining a fracture, one of the most common fractures being a vertebral fracture. The lifetime risk of sustaining a clinically diagnosed vertebral fracture from age 50 years onward is 8% in men and 15% in women. READ MORE

  2. 2. Defining the clinical usefulness of vertebral fracture assessment

    Author : Lisa Johansson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Vertebral fracture; vertebral fracture assessment; osteoporosis; DXA; HRpQCT; bone microindentation; mild vertebral fracture; physical function; fracture risk; incident fracture; older women;

    Abstract : Objective: Vertebral fractures (VFs) are the most common osteoporotic fracture and among the strongest predictors for future fracture. VFs can be identified by vertebral fracture assessment (VFA) from lateral spine imaging (LSI) by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). READ MORE

  3. 3. Bone-compliant cements for vertebral augmentation

    Author : Céline Robo; Cecilia Persson; Elizabeth Tanner; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; bone cement; low modulus; vertebroplasty; Teknisk fysik med inriktning mot materialvetenskap; Engineering Science with specialization in Materials Science;

    Abstract : Acrylic bone cement based on poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is commonly used during vertebral augmentation procedures for the treatment of osteoporosis-induced vertebral compression fractures. However, the high stiffness of the cement compared to that of the surrounding trabecular bone is presumed to facilitate the formation of new fractures shortly after surgery. READ MORE

  4. 4. The acute osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture. Its natural course and characteristics

    Author : Nobuyuki Suzuki; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Vertebral body fracture; Osteoporosis; Pain; Quality of life; Disability; Compression fracture; Prognosis; Treatment; Prevalent fracture; Epidemiology;

    Abstract : Aim: The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate the natural course and the characteristics of the acute osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture in order to better understand and improve treatment for this type of fracture. Patients and methods: Eligible patients were all patients over 40 years of age who sought medical care at the emergency unit at Sahlgrenska University Hospital (studies I-III) or referred to the X-ray Department at Capio Diagnostic Center (study IV) because of back pain with a radiographically-confirmed acute vertebral body fracture which resulted from a low energy trauma. 5. 5. Does spinal alignment influence car occupant responses? -The influence of variation in whole spinal alignment patterns on vertebral kinematics under rear impact conditions-

    Author : Fusako Sato Sakayachi; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; neck injury; rear impact; whiplash; occupant; female; cervical vertebral kinematics; MRI; Multi-Dimensional Scaling; automotive seated posture; spinal alignment;

    Abstract : The susceptibility of women to Whiplash Associated Disorders (WADs) has been the focus of numerous epidemiologic studies. Summarising the epidemiologic WAD studies, women were found to be subject to up to three times higher risk of sustaining WADs than men. READ MORE
