  1. 6. Wood Fuel Pellets: Sawdust Drying in the Energy System

    Author : Magnus Ståhl; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; wood fuel pellets; sawdust; drying; pellet production; recirculation; VOC; system integration; Miljö- och energisystem; Environmental and Energy Systems;

    Abstract : In 2004, the amount of wood fuel pellets used in Sweden was 1 256 000 tons, it was mostly used in large scale burning for district heating. Over the last 10 years, a significant increase in pellet production has occurred and today the preferred raw materials for pellet production, i.e., dry sawdust and wood shavings, are insufficient. 2. 7. Resin acids in commercial products and the work environment of Swedish wood pellets production : Analytical methodology, occurrence and exposure

    Author : Sara Axelsson; Ulrika Nilsson; Kåre Eriksson; Håkan Westberg; Martin Harper; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Rosin; resin acids; HPLC ESI-MS; air sampling; urine samples; wood pellets; wood dust; Analytical Chemistry; analytisk kemi;

    Abstract : The aims of the work this thesis is based upon were to develop convenient analytical procedures for determining resin acids in biological and environmental matrices, and apply them to enhance understanding of the occurrence, exposure to and uptake by exposed individuals of resin acids. Particular focus has been on the workplace environment of the Swedish wood pellets industry. READ MORE

  3. 8. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy in Industrial Hygiene Applications : Assessment of Emissions from and Exposures in Wood Processing Industries

    Author : Urban Svedberg; Christer Edling; Bo Galle; Hans-Erik Högberg; Nils Plato; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicine; FTIR; Exposure; Emission; Saw mills; Wood pellets; Tracer gas; Monoterpenes; Hexanal; Carbon monoxide; Open path FTIR; Medicin; Dermatology and venerology; clinical genetics; internal medicine; Dermatologi och venerologi; klinisk genetik; invärtesmedicin;

    Abstract : This thesis evaluates the use of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) as an approach to the increasingly difficult air sampling challenges within the field of occupational and environmental hygiene. The application of FTIR is exemplified by the assessment of emissions from and exposures in the sawmill and pellet industries. READ MORE

  4. 9. Dioxin emissions from small-scale combustion of bio-fuel and household waste

    Author : Björn Hedman; Stellan Marklund; Calle Nilsson; Brian Gullett; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Source-sorted waste; Household waste; Textile; Biofuel; Firewood; Pellets; Combustion; Wood boiler; Pellet boiler; Backyard burning; Garden waste; PCDD F; dioxin; PCB; Emission factor; Källsorterat avfall; Hushållsavfall; Textil; Biobränsle; Ved; Pellets; Förbränning; Vedpanna; Pelletpanna; Trädgårdsavfall; PCDD F; dioxin; PCB; Emissionsfaktor; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi;

    Abstract : Denna avhandling behandlar rökgasutsläpp av persistenta organiska föroreningar, framförallt dioxiner, vid förbränning av fasta biobränslen och torrt hushållsavfall i relativt små anläggningar (5-600 kW) utan avancerad rökgasreningsteknik.Samförbränning av avfall och biobränsle i effektiva mindre biobränslepannor testades som en alternativ strategi till den vanligen förekommande storskaliga hanteringen och förbränningen fast hushållsavfall. 5. 10. Implication of pellet quality on combustion performance

    Author : Peter Sundberg; Claes Tullin; Sylvia Larsson; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Energy Engineering; Energiteknik;

    Abstract : Quality aspects of wood pellets and their use have been of utmost importance since the development of the pellet market in the early 1980s. Research and hard-earned knowledge have resulted in advancements in the field, but there are still uncertainties in the pellet industry about how different quality aspects affect combustion performance.
