11. Islet xenograft rejection : studies in the pig-to-rodents and pig-to-primate models
Abstract : The aims of this thesis was: 1) to compare islet allo- and xenograft rejection in rats, using immunosuppression with CsA in a mixed allogeneic-xenogeneic islet transplantation model, 2) to evaluate the efficacy of various immunosuppressive drugs, with special reference to Leflunomide, in preventing islet xenograft rejection in the pig-to-rat model, 3) to perform an immunohistochemical study of porcine islet xenograft rejection in primates including primates treated with CsA+DSG, and 4) to study the metabolism and excretion of porcine C-peptide in mice, with special reference to the use of donor-specific C-peptide for monitoring islet xenograft function. In summary, the results were as follows: 1. READ MORE

12. Using a 3-d model system to screen for drugs effective on solid tumors
Abstract : There is a large medical need for the development of effective anticancer agents with minimal side effects. The present thesis represents an attempt to identify potent drugs for treatment of solid tumors. READ MORE

13. Adenovirus-mediated Gene Therapy of Prostate Cancer
Abstract : Adenovirus-mediated gene therapy is a potential complement to standard cancer treatments. Advantages are that vectors can be used to target tumors and that replicating viruses lead to increased therapeutic dosage. READ MORE

14. Optimization and validation of a species-specific in vivo approach for studies on growth and progression of neural crest derived tumours
Abstract : Background: Despite great advantages in cancer therapeutics during the last decades, therapy-resistance remains a problem in the majority of malignancies. Hence, development of more effective therapeutics is critical to enhance survival of patients with cancer. READ MORE

15. Application of a New Logic to Old Drugs: Angiogenesis Inhibition in Neuroblastoma
Abstract : Neuroblastoma is one of the most common solid cancers of early childhood. In Sweden, approximately 10-15 cases occur annually. The overall five-year neuroblastoma survival in Europe is approximately 45%. Since cancer treatment involves drugs with risks of side effects in the growing child, there is a need for more effective and less toxic drugs. READ MORE
