  1. 1. Nanostructuring and Age Hardening in TiSCN, ZrAlN, and TiAlN Thin Films

    Author : Lars Johnson; Lars Hultman; Axel Flink; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : thin films; age hardening; spinodal decomposition; TiSiCN; ZrAlN; TiAlN; Transmission electron microscopy; Atom probe tomography; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : This thesis explores nanostructuring in TiSiCN, ZrAlN, and TiAlN thin films deposited by cathodic arc evaporation onto cemented carbide substrates, with intended applications for cutting tools. The three systems were found to exhibit age hardening upon annealing, by different mechanisms, into the superhard regime (≥30 GPa), as determined by a combination of electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, atom probe tomography, erda, and nanoindentation tech- niques. 2. 2. Nanostructured TiN/ZrAlN and HfAlN Thin Films : Effect of Structure on Mechanical Properties

    Author : Marcus Lorentzon; Naureen Ghafoor; Jens Birch; Johanna Rosén; Peter Hedström; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : Transition metal nitrides are a remarkable group of ceramic materials that offer exceptional properties such as high hardness, low tribological wear, excellent thermal stability, and high oxidation resistance. Alloys such as TiN, CrN, VN, ZrN, and HfN have been identified as ideal candidates for protective coatings on cutting tool inserts in the metal processing industry. READ MORE

  3. 3. High temperature behavior of arc evaporated ZrAlN and TiAlN thin films

    Author : Lina Rogström; Magnus Odén; Lars Hultman; David Rafaja; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Hard coatings can extend the life time of a tool substantially and enable higher cutting speeds which increase the productivity in the cutting application. The aim with this thesis is to extend the understanding on how the microstructure and mechanical properties are affected by high temperatures similar to what a cutting tool can reach during operation. 4. 4. Mechanical and thermal stability of hard nitride coatings

    Author : Yu-Hsiang Chen; Magnus Odén; Lina Rogström; Tomasz Liskiewicz; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Hard coating’s thermal stability is essential due to the high temperature environment of high-speed cutting applications, while the phase and microstructure evolution induced by exposing the coating to high temperature affects the mechanical properties. In this thesis, the mechanical stability of arc-evaporated, hard, transition metal nitride coatings annealed at high temperature is analyzed and related to the phase and microstructure evolution. 5. 5. Multiscale materials design of hard coatings for improved fracture resistance and thermal stability

    Author : Phani Kumar Yalamanchili; Magnus Odén; Naureen Ghafoor; Emilio Jiménez-Piqué; Jon Molina; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Physical vapor deposited hard coatings comprised of cubic (c) transition metal (TM)-Al-N, and (TM)-Si-N are the current workhorse materials for a large number of metal cutting and wear resistant applications to fight against the extreme conditions of temperature and stress simultaneously. In spite of a high degree of sophistication in terms of material choice and microstructural design, a lower fracture resistance and limited thermal stability of the coatings remains a technological challenge in the field.
