  1. 1. Solar radiation effects on decomposition and decomposers of plant litter in lakes

    Author : Måns Denward; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; glucosidase; photo inhibition; photo oxidation; littoral; lakes; ergosterol; fungi; phragmites; bacteria; UV-B; Hydrobiology; marine biology; aquatic ecology; limnology; Marinbiologi; limnologi; akvatisk ekologi;

    Abstract : This thesis summarizes the results of a series of experiments, from test tube up to field study scale, performed to increase the understanding of solar radiation effects on decomposition and microbial decomposers of plant litter in stagnant water of littoral zones. In conclusion, I suggest that fungi play a significant role in the decomposition of plant litter submersed in lakes, and that their distribution is dependent on detritus quality and water chemistry, but also tends to be inversely related to the occurrence of bacteria attached to the litter. 2. 2. The aquatic microbial food web and occurence of predation-resistant and potentially pathogenic bacteria, such as Francisella tularensis

    Author : Johanna Thelaus; Agneta Andersson; Mats Forsman; Farooq Azam; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bacteria; protozoa; ecology; predation; nutrient-availability; microbial food web; model; predation-resistance; Francisella; reservoir; biofilm formation; Freshwater ecology; Limnisk ekologi;

    Abstract : All natural aquatic systems harbour a vast variety of microorganisms. In the aquatic microbial food web, the larger microorganisms (i.e. protozoa) feed on the smaller microorganisms (i. READ MORE

  3. 3. Distribution and activity of nitrogen-fixing bacteria in marine and estuarine waters

    Author : Hanna Farnelid; Lasse Riemann; Jonathan Zehr; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; 454-pyrosequencing; diazotrophs; heterotrophic bacteria; marine bacteria; marine microbial ecology; microbiology; nifH; nitrogenase; nitrogen fixation; PCR; qPCR; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : In aquatic environments the availability of nitrogen (N) generally limits primary production. N2-fixing prokaryotes (diazotrophs) can convert N2 gas into ammonium and provide significant input of N into the oceans. Cyanobacteria are thought to be the main N2-fixers but diazotrophs also include a wide range of heterotrophic bacteria. READ MORE

  4. 4. Bacteria that escape predation : waterborne pathogens and their relatives

    Author : Karolina I. A. Eriksson; Agneta Andersson; Johanna Thelaus; Jon Ahlinder; David Sundell; Klaus Jürgens; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bacterial pathogens; protozoa; predation resistance; aquatic microbiology; climate change; opportunists; humification; iron; environmental science; miljövetenskap; mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : The hidden presence of opportunistic bacterial pathogens in the environment evokes concerns about emerging diseases, especially in the light of climate change. The co-evolution of bacteria and their predators (protozoa) has led to bacterial defence strategies of which some contribute to the ability of bacteria to cause disease. READ MORE

  5. 5. Microbiome Of Ecotoxicity Assays

    Author : Asa Motiei; Elena Gorokhova; Natàlia Corcoll; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biofilm; Microplastics; Suspended solids; Aquatic toxicology; Daphnia magna; Ecotoxicology; Bacterial colonization; Particle aggregation; Microbiome interaction; Standardization; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : Microorganisms are ubiquitous and present in animal microbiomes, particulates, and colonizable surfaces of test systems. From an ecotoxicological perspective, they are metabolically active biological compartments that respond to test conditions, including test substances. READ MORE
