  1. 1. Satellite and ground based observations of massive star forming regions

    Author : Henrik Olofsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; abundances - ISM; ISM; clouds - ISM; jets and outflows - ISM; ISM - Submillimeter; molecules - Radio lines;

    Abstract : Results from submm/mm radio astronomical observations, using the astronomy/-aeronomy satellite Odin and the 20m telescope at the Onsala Space Observatory, are presented. Analysis of spectroscopic data of interstellar rotational emission lines from gaseous H2O residing in giant molecular clouds (GMCs), reveal important new clues about the chemistry and spatial distribution of water molecules in these regions, including estimates of the water abundance in molecular outflows associated with massive star formation. 2. 2. Astrochemical Investigations of Complex Organics in Cold Molecular Cloud Cores

    Author : Tadeus Carl; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; astrobiology; astrochemistry; ISM – molecular clouds; ISM – molecules; dark clouds;

    Abstract : Astrochemistry is the study of the formation and evolution of molecules in the interstellar medium (ISM) of the Milky Way and other galaxies. Molecules start to accumulate in the coldest and densest regions of the ISM, namely molecular clouds, and as of this date, 307 interstellar molecules are identified. READ MORE

  3. 3. Chemodynamical Simulations of Star-Forming Molecular Clouds

    Author : Chia-Jung Hsu; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; methods:numerical; magnetohydrodynamics; stars:formation; astrochemistry; ISM:clouds;

    Abstract : Stars are known to form from dense, dusty clumps and cores of molecular clouds. However, there is no consensus on a theory that can predict the rate of star formation, its clustering, and the conditions needed for massive stars to be born. A major challenge is how to observe and characterise the gas that is the fuel for star formation. READ MORE

  4. 4. Astrochemistry at Millimetre and Submillimetre Wavelengths

    Author : Eva Wirström; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Astrobiology - Astrochemistry - ISM: abundances - ISM: molecules - Submillimetre;

    Abstract : The focus of this thesis is a series of observational tests, aiming to clarify the chemical and physical origin of interstellar molecules. Spectral lines at millimetre and submillimetre wavelengths, caused by rotational transitions in CO, H2O, NH3, CH3OH, CH3SH, C2H3CN, and several of their isotopologues, have been observed towards regions of star-formation in the Galaxy. 5. 5. Observations with Herschel: High-mass star formation and the search for NH+

    Author : Mitra Hajigholi; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; High-mass star: formation - ISM: abundances - ISM: molecules;

    Abstract : The capture and interpretation of the electromagnetic radiation we receive from space is essential to our understanding of the cosmos. When the Earth's opaque atmosphere prevents the far-infrared radiation to reach ground based antennas, space observatories become crucial to collect that important piece of the large puzzle that otherwise would have been lost.
