  1. 1. Gene Mapping in Ficedula Flycatchers

    Author : Niclas Backström; Hans Ellegren; Juha Merilä; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : collared flycatcher; SNP; linkage disequilibrium; genetic map; pedigree;

    Abstract : In order to get full understanding of how evolution proceeds in natural settings it is necessary to reveal the genetic basis of the phenotypic traits that play a role for individual fitness in different environments. There are a few possible approaches, most of which stem from traditional mapping efforts in domestic animals and other model species. READ MORE

  2. 2. Black holes and trapped surfaces

    Author : Emma Jakobsson; Ingemar Bengtsson; István Rácz; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; teoretisk fysik; Theoretical Physics;

    Abstract : The study of black holes is an important part of general relativity. However, the very definition of black holes is not completely satisfactory. Alternative definitions are based on the concept of trapped surfaces. This licentiate thesis is based on work with the aim to better understand the behaviour of such trapped surfaces. READ MORE

  3. 3. Phylogeny, diversity and toxin production related to cyanobacterial symbioses

    Author : Dimitra Papaefthimiou; Ulla Rasmussen; Kaarina Sivonen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Azolla; BMAA; cyanobacteria; cyanobionts; cyanolichens; diversity; HPLC; Nostoc; phylogeny; symbiosis; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi; växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology;

    Abstract : Phylogeny and morphology were examined for the cyanobionts from the water fern Azolla and the cyanobacterial genus Nostoc originating from symbioses with different host plants (genera Gunnera, Cycas, Dioon, Encephalarthos, Macrozamia, and Anthoceros), the lichen genus Pannaria, and free-living Nostoc isolates from different habitats. Nostoc isolates of Pannaria formed a closely related group, but, in general, no monophyletic nature was attributed to the genus Nostoc, in contrast to the cyanobionts from Azolla which were contained in a unique monophyletic group. 4. 4. Intracranial Compliance and Secondary Brain Damage. Experimental and Clinical Studies in Traumatic Head Injury

    Author : Konstantin Salci; Per Enblad; Pelle Nilsson; Peter Hutchinsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Neurosciences; Traumatic brain injury; Intracranial compliance; Secondary insults; Microdialysis; Neurointensive care; Neurovetenskap;

    Abstract : Traumatic brain injury (TBI) renders the brain more vulnerable to secondary insults. The increased vulnerability can probably be explained by a combination of disturbances in hemodynamics, metabolism and craniospinal dynamics. Reduced ability to compensate for added intracranial volume, i.e. READ MORE

  5. 5. Feminism and the Academy : Exploring the Politics of Institutionalization in Gender Studies in Sweden
