    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Infektioner; peracety ions; Lactobacillus plantarum 299v; metronidazole; fusidic acid; PCR-ribotyping; Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhoea; AP-PCR; Infections; acidified nitrite;

    Abstract : Clostridium difficile is a spore-forming bacterium that causes antibiotic-associated diarrhoea and is responsible for hospital outbreaks of diarrhoea. In the first study, 173 consecutive isolates of C. READ MORE

  2. 2. Antibacterial effects of nitrite in urine

    Author : Stefan Carlsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Nitrite; nitrate; nitric oxide; urinary tract infection; catheter-associated urinary tract infection; antimicrobial; Escherichia coli.;

    Abstract : Urinary tract infections (UTI`s) are among the most common conditions causing individuals to seek medical care. In addition, catheter-associated infections account for most of the hospital-acquired UTI´s and is also a major source of resistant nosocomial pathogens. READ MORE

  3. 3. Formation and role of nitric oxide in host defense reactions in the urinary bladder

    Author : Edward R I Morcos; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : bladder cancer; BCG; cytokines; urinary tract infection; nitric oxide; nitric oxide synthase; nitrite; nitrate; capillary electrophoresis;

    Abstract : Nitric oxide (NO) is an important biological mediator and cell signaling molecule. It is also involved in several host defense reactions. NO is formed in vivo from L-arginine by the enzyme NO synthase (NOS). However, it can also be formed non-enzymatically from acidified nitrite. READ MORE

  4. 4. Airborne nitric oxide : inflammatory marker and aerocrine messenger in man

    Author : Jon Lundberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ARDS; asthma; cystic fibrosis; cystitis; exhaled air; inflammatory bowel disease; inhaled nitric oxide; Kartagener s syndrome; nitric oxide synthase; sinusitis; ;

    Abstract : We have used a chemiluminescence technique to measure gaseous nitric oxide (NO) directly in hollow organs of humans. NO production was studied in the airways of healthy controls and patients with chronic inflammatory airway disease, in the stomach of healthy subjects, in the colon of patients with inflammatory bowel disease, and in the urinary bladder of patients with cystitis.
