  1. 1. Properties of Activated Sludge Flocs

    Author : Britt-Marie Wilen; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; floc strength; aerobic microbial activity; reflocculation; dissolved oxygen concentration; settling; deflocculation; filamentous microorganisms; shear forces; floc size; activated sludge;

    Abstract : The quality of the effluent from activated sludge treatment plants is highly dependent on the efficiency of the solid-liquid separation process. The aim of this thesis was to study (i) the effects of dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration on effluent turbidity and flocculation, as well as on the settling properties of activated sludge, for both short term and long term scales, and (ii) the influence of aerobic microbial activity on the stability of activated sludge flocs. 2. 2. Sludge-derived char : utilisation as a metal sorbent in dilute wastewaters

    Author : Ida Sylwan; Eva Thorin; Lena Johansson Westholm; Konrad Koch; Mälardalens universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; sorption; adsorption; sludge; biosolids; metal; wastewater treatment; sorption; adsorption; slam; metaller; avloppsvattenrening; Energy- and Environmental Engineering; energi- och miljöteknik;

    Abstract : Metal concentrations in soil and water have increased since the Industrial Revolution, which may have negative health and environmental effects. Metal pollution occurs, for instance, in municipal wastewater, industrial wastewater, and stormwater. Concentrations are often low, due to dilution. A common technology for metal removal is sorption. 4. 4. Modeling and Control of Bilinear Systems : Application to the Activated Sludge Process

    Author : Mats Ekman; Bengt Carlsson; Claes Breitholtz; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; bilinear systems; modeling; optimal control; parameter estimation; errors-in-variables; activated sludge process; Automatic control; Reglerteknik;

    Abstract : This thesis concerns modeling and control of bilinear systems (BLS). BLS are linear but not jointly linear in state and control. In the first part of the thesis, a background to BLS and their applications to modeling and control is given. READ MORE

  5. 5. Optimization methods for sedimentation and denitrification in activated sludge

    Author : Serena K. R. Hasselblad; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Earth sciences; solids flux; wastewater treatment; secondary clarifier; activated sludge; Geovetenskap; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Sedimentology; sedimentologi;

    Abstract : Denitrification on readily biodegradable carbon compounds and separation of biological sludge from effluent water are examples of critical sub-processes for nitrogen removal in activated sludge. The aim of this thesis was to find operational strategies and newmethods to optimize these processes. READ MORE
