  1. 1. Migratory behaviour of Baltic salmon (Salmo salar L.) : adaptive significance of annual cycles

    Author : Torleif Eriksson; Lars-Ove Eriksson; Kees Groot; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Migratory behaviour; annual cycles; Baltic salmon; Salmo salar; annual time program; swimming behaviour; mortality; maturity; life history;

    Abstract : This thesis evaluates the adaptive significance of annual cycles on the migratory behaviour of Baltic salmon (Salmo salar L.). The studies have included field experiments as well as laboratory studies gf maturity and migratory behaviour patterns of smolts and postsmolts mainly from the Angerman river population. READ MORE

  2. 2. Adaptive behaviour in traffic : An individual road user perspective

    Author : Sara Nygårdhs; Björn Johansson; Dick de Waard; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Adaptation; road-user; comfort zone;

    Abstract : Road-user adaptation is a prerequisite for traffic to run smoothly. By adaptation, the road user aims to ensure a feeling of comfort according to his or her present state and capability. In this thesis, adaptive behaviour of car drivers and cyclists in response to different factors is explored, using the individual perspective of the road user. READ MORE

  3. 3. Resilience in High Risk Work : Analysing Adaptive Performance

    Author : Amy Rankin; Henrik Eriksson; Margareta Lützhöft; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Resilience Engineering; Safety Management; Adaptive Capacity; Improvisation;

    Abstract : In today’s complexsocio-technical systems it is not possible to foresee and prepare for allfuture events. To cope with the intricacy and coupling between people,technical systems and the dynamic environment people are required tocontinuously adapt. READ MORE

  4. 4. Domestication effects on foraging behaviour : consequences for adaptability in chickens

    Author : Christina Lindqvist; Per Jensen; Björn Forkman; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Etologi; chicken; domestication effects; behaviour; red jungle fowl RJF ; contrafreeloading CFL ; egg production; Ethnology; Etnologi;

    Abstract : The main aim of this thesis was to study domestication effects on foraging behaviour in chickens and to investigate whether and how domestication and selection for high production have influenced adaptability in chickens. Two domestic strains of chickens (egg layers and meat type chickens) and their wild ancestor, the red jungle fowl (RJF) were compared in different test situations with respect to foraging behaviour and adaptability. 5. 5. Predation as a driver of reproductive isolation - from adaptive divergence to hybrid inviability

    Author : Varpu Pärssinen; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; reproductive isolation; ecological speciation; predation; adaptive radiation; evolution; behaviour; fish;

    Abstract : Natural selection can play an important role in the origin of new species. When reproductive isolation evolves as a result of ecologically-based divergent natural selection, the process is referred to as ecological speciation. In most organisms, sufficient reproductive isolation is considered to be essential for the establishment of new species. READ MORE
