1. From Betterment to Bt maize : agricultural development and the introduction of genetically modified maize to South African smallholders
Abstract : Agriculture has received renewed attention in poverty reduction efforts in Africa in recent years, and there are hopes that GM crops could have an important role in helping increase smallholder yields and reduce poverty. Drawing on critical discourse analysis (CDA) and livelihoods perspectives, this thesis examines the ideas governing the Massive Food Production Programme (MFPP), an agricultural development programme aiming to reduce poverty by raising agricultural production in Eastern Cape Province, South Africa, and its local effects when implemented in smallholder communities. 2. Cognition and decision-making in adoption of agricultural decision support systems : the case of precision agriculture
Abstract : Precision agriculture (PA) has a central role to play in a sustainable intensification trajectory of agriculture, including increased yields and decreased environmental impact. Although grounded in advanced technologies this still implies that the individual farmer will have to develop knowledge that is complex, diverse and local. READ MORE

3. Sustainable Land and Water Management for a Greener Future : Large-scale insights in support of Agroecological Intensification
Abstract : The challenge of producing more food in times of climate change, degraded land and scares water resources is calling for a radical transformation of agriculture. Sustainable agricultural intensification is the process of increasing the productivity of farms while preserving functional ecosystems. READ MORE

4. Agricultural nutrient budgets in Europe: data, methods, and indicators
Abstract : Agricultural production systems feed humanity but also cause a range of adverse environmental effects, including climate change, loss of biodiversity, and pollution of air and water. A main cause of these effects is the emissions of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) that occur as a side effect of nutrient cycling in agriculture. READ MORE

5. Towards synthesis for nitrogen fertilisation using a decision support system
Abstract : Nitrogen (N) fertilisation in crops can be made more efficient by moving from uniform application to meeting variable crop requirements within fields. Within field variable rate N fertilisation of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is practically feasible using information from web-based decision support systems (DSS). READ MORE
