  1. 1. Mechanism of action of antipsychotic drugs : focus on the nucleus accumbens and the prefronta cortex : an experimental study

    Author : Monica M Marcus; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Schizophrenia; antipsychotic drug; nucleus accumbens shell; nucleus accumbens core; prefrontal cortex; dopamine; 5-11T2A receptor; alpha1 adrenoceptor; C12 adrenoceptor; glutamate; nicotine.;

    Abstract : Antipsychotic drugs have been classified as typical or atypical. To achieve an effective antipsychotic effect with typical antipsychotic drugs, e.g. haloperidol, a dopamine D2 receptor blockade of about 70% seems necessary. READ MORE

  2. 2. New insights into the control of small artery function in human pregnancy and estrogen receptor beta knockout mice

    Author : Leanid Luksha; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Background: Available data clearly indicates functional and morphological differences between small and large arteries, and observations from studies on large arteries may not be applicable to understand the physiology of small arteries (~200-300mum) that actively participate in the regulation of peripheral vascular resistance, blood pressure and flow to target organs. These events confer cardiovascular adaptation to normal pregnancy (NP), however they are disturbed in preeclampsia (PE) and in estrogen receptor beta knockout (ERbetaKO) mice at a certain age. 3. 3. Adrenoceptors and nerve growth factor. Effects of electro-acupuncture and physical exercise in rats with steroid-induced polycystic ovaries

    Author : Luigi Manni; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is complex endocrine and metabolic disorder associated with ovulatory dysfunction, follicular cyst and hyperandrogenism. The abnormalities detected in PCOS have been attributed to primary defects in the hypothalamic-pituitary unit, the ovarian microenvironment, the adrenal gland, and the insulin/insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1 metabolic regulatory system. 4. 4. Conctraction-mediating receptors in human peripheral vessels with special reference to veins and lymphatics

    Author : Trygve Sjöberg; Thoraxkirurgi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Human; arteries; veins; lymphatis; contraction; in vitro; in vivo; adrenergic receptors; noradrenaline; cirazoline; phenylephrine; clonidine; calcium antagonists; nifedipine; diltiazem; prostaglandins; thromboxane A2; U-46619; BM-13.505; indomethacin;

    Abstract : By means of a myograph, postjunctional alpha-adrenoceptors were characterized in human superficial epigastric arteries and veins obtained from health subjects. The rank order of potency of subtype selective agonists could not be used for receptor characterization in these vessels, whereas antagonists gave distinct results. READ MORE
