  1. 1. Environmental impact of alum shale mining in Kvarntorp, Närke, Sweden

    Author : Kristina Åhlgren; Mattias Bäckström; Stefan Karlsson; Roger Herbert; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; alum shale; black shale; oil shale; Kvarntorp; uranium; surface water; groundwater; open pits;

    Abstract : Due to scarcity of imported liquid fuel during World War II, alum shale was mined for oil production in the Kvarntorp area 1942-1966. The shale contains both organic matter (kerogen) and elevated concentrations of trace elements such as molybdenum, nickel, uranium and vanadium. READ MORE

  2. 2. Weathering of mining waste rock containing alum shale and limestone

    Author : Erik Puura; KTH; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Geochemical processes occurring in the waste rock dumps ofan old phosphate mine, located in Maardu, northem Estonia, havebeen studied and modelled. The waste rock contains pyritic,metalliferous and organic-rich shale, as well as limestone.Production of acidity during pyrite oxidation is a potentialmechanism for heavy metal release. READ MORE

  3. 3. Thermal Modelling of the Caledonian Basin, Scandinavia and a Northern North Sea Profile

    Author : Jörgen Samuelsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; petroleum; vitrinite reflectance; thermal maturation; flexural rigidity; heat flow; suppression; thermal conductivity; North West Shelf; Alum Shale;

    Abstract : The reason for the registered high paleotemperatures of the Scandinavian Alum Shale was investigated by heat flow modelling constrained by vitrinite-like reflectance. The behaviour of the lithosphere under a load was modelled and the paleotemperatures were explained by burial of the Alum Shale in a foreland basin, developing during the Caledonian orogeny. 4. 4. Bacteria and geochemistry in a former uranium open pit mine - mobilization of trace metals

    Author : Frida Edberg; Sara J. M. Holmström; Hans Borg; Stephan M. Kraemer; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : Pseudomonas fluorescens; siderophore; Ranstad; alum shale; iron; pyrosequencing; redox; size fractionation; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : In mining areas around the world, chemical and biotic processes have lead to the release of toxic substances, e.g. metals. Microbial processes influence metal speciation, while the chemical environment shapes and controls microbial populations. READ MORE

  5. 5. Geochemical studies of uranium, molybdenum and vanadium in a Swedish alum shale

    Author : Gösta Armands; Stockholms universitet; []
