16. Studies on Airway Surface Liquid in Connection with Cystic Fibrosis
Abstract : Cystic fibrosis (CF) is one of the most common fatal inherited diseases, most prevalent among Caucasians. CF is caused by a mutation in the gene coding for the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), which helps to create sweat, digestive juices, and airway surface liquid (ASL). 17. Acute Confusional State in Elderly Patients with Hip Fracture. Identification of risk factors and intervention using a prehospital and perioperative management program
Abstract : Abstract The overall aim of this thesis was to increase knowledge about underlying causes and perioperative risk factors of Acute Confusional State (ACS) in elderly patients with hip fracture and to investigate the effect of a multi-factorial intervention program in order to decrease the number of patients who develop ACS. The aim in paper I was to describe elderly patients with hip fracture on the basis of the American Society of Anesthesiologists’ ASA classification system and to identify preoperative risk factors in relation to the postoperative outcome measured up to 4-months after surgery. 18. Cardiovascular response to hyperoxemia, hemodilution and burns : a clinical and experimental study
Abstract : The last decades less invasive monitoring and analytical tools have been developed for the evaluation of myocardial mechanics in clinical praxis. In critical care, these are longed-for complements to pulmonary artery catheter monitoring, additionally offering previously inaccessible information. READ MORE

19. Ventilation/Perfusion Matching and its Effect on Volatile Pharmacokinetics
Abstract : The mismatching of alveolar ventilation and perfusion (VA/Q) is the major determinant of impaired gas exchange. The gold standard for analyzing VA/Q distribution is the multiple inert gas elimination technique (MIGET), conventionally based on gas chromatography (GC), and, although simple in principle, a technically demanding procedure limiting its use. 20. Effects of lung-protective ventilation on microbial growth and inflammatory biomarkers in experimental sepsis
Abstract : Sepsis is a severe disease state characterised by a dysregulated host response to infection. The need for mechanical ventilation is common in the sepsis population, for primarily pulmonary reasons or as a result of other organ dysfunction. READ MORE
