  1. 1. Antioxidant-Impregnated Polymers / Antioxidant Ability and Interactions with Food

    Author : Carolina Wessling; Avdelningen för livsmedel och läkemedel; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Food and drink technology; shelf-life; interactions; packaging; polymers; BHT; antioxidants; a-tocopherol; Livsmedelsteknik;

    Abstract : Interactions between antioxidant-impregnated low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and polypropylene (PP), and oxygen-sensitive foods have been investigated. BHT and a-tocopherol are two antioxidants commonly used in both foods and polymers. In general, BHT was rapidly lost from LDPE film in contact with various foodstuffs. READ MORE

  2. 2. Long-term properties of polyethylene films : efficiency of a natural antioxidant

    Author : Clara Strandberg; Ann-Christine Albertsson; Jukka Seppälä; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Polymer Technology; alfa-tocopherol; Polyethylene PE ; Thermal aging; Infrared Spectroscopy FT-IR ; Chemiluminescence CL ; Solid-phase microextraction SPME ; Chemistry; Kemi;

    Abstract : There is a growing awareness of the risks of pollution in biological systems and one potential problem is the synthetic antioxidants, used for e.g. the stabilisation of polymeric materials. Natural antioxidants are an interesting alternative, if the high efficiency and thermal stability of the synthetic compounds can be reached. READ MORE

  3. 3. Migration from plastic food packaging during microwave heating

    Author : Jonas Alin; Minna Hakkarainen; Sahar Al-Malaika; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; migration; food packaging; microwave; degradation; food simulant; antioxidant;

    Abstract : Microwave heating of food has increased rapidly as a food processing technique. This increases the concern that chemicals could migrate from food packaging to food. The specific effect of microwave heating in contrast to conventional heating on overall and specific migration from common plastic food storage boxes was studied in this work. READ MORE

  4. 4. Towards molecular weight-dependent uses of kraft lignin

    Author : Ayumu Tagami; Mikael Lindström; Olena Sevastyanova; Anna Wistrand; Stefan Backa; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; kraft lignin; successive solvent fractionation; molecular weight; structural analysis; thermal stability; heat capacity; antioxidant activity; methylene blue sorption; tunicate cellulose nanofiber-starch lignin composites films; film properties; Fiber- och polymervetenskap; Fibre and Polymer Science;

    Abstract : There is growing demand for a more efficient use of polymers that originate from renewable feedstocks due to the depleting supply of fossil fuels, based on economic and environmental reasons. As a result, lignin has attracted renewed interest as a resource for various bioproducts. READ MORE

  5. 5. Enzymatic hydrolysis coupled to hot water extraction for determination of flavonoids in plants

    Author : Sofia Lindahl; Centrum för analys och syntes; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; extraction; flavonoids; quercetin; biocatalysis; beta-glucosidase; sustainable chemistry; hyphenation; molecularly imprinted polymers; onion;

    Abstract : The word sustainability is more and more frequently used within the field of chemistry and in many other fields. Green or sustainable chemistry was introduced during the 90 ́s as a field of chemistry where the environmental and health impacts of processes and products are evaluated and improved. READ MORE
