  1. 6. Vitamin D metabolism in osteoblast-like cells : effects of drugs on inactivation by CYP24A1

    Author : Ahmad Zayny; Maria Norlin; Kjell Wikvall; Håkan Melhus; Inger Johansson; Fredrik Jerneren; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmaceutical Biochemistry; Farmaceutisk biokemi; Pharmaceutical Biochemistry; Farmaceutisk biokemi;

    Abstract : Vitamin D is essential for bone function, and deficiency in active vitamin D hormone can lead to bone disorders. Long-term treatment with glucocorticoids and antiretroviral drugs used to treat HIV infection, results in osteoporosis and increased risk of fractures. Much remains unclear regarding the effects of these compounds in bone cells. READ MORE

  2. 7. Incidence, predictors and biomarkers for antiretroviral and/or anti-tuberculosis drugs induced liver injury

    Author : Getnet Yimer Ali; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Anti-tuberculosis and/or antiretroviral drugs induced liver injury (DILI) is a major challenge when managing TB and/or HIV patients. The aims of this thesis were to identify incidence, risk factors, and management of DILI among 4 different treatment groups namely; HIV positive individuals with no TB co-infection and had a CD4 count of < 200 cells/μl (taking ARV drugs alone = arm 1), TB-HIV co-infected patients with a CD4 count of < 200 cells/μl (taking both anti-TB and ARV drugs = arm 2), TB-HIV co-infected patients with a CD4 count of > 200 cells/μl (taking anti-TB alone = arm 3), HIV negative TB patients (taking anti-TB alone = arm 4). 3. 8. Resistance to antiviral drugs in HIV and HBV

    Author : Anna Lindström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : HIV-1; HBV; drug-resistance; Sanger sequencing; pyrosequencing;

    Abstract : Development of resistance to antiviral drugs is a major problem in treatment of several viral infections including human immunodeficiency type 1 (HIV-1) and hepatitis B virus (HBV). Resistance may be the primary reason for treatment failure, but may also develop secondary to problems with adherence or pharmacokinetics. READ MORE

    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : This thesis begins with an account of the development of the antiretroviral treatment paradigm for HIV infection, focusing on the emergence of present day principles of antiretroviral therapy (e.g. READ MORE

  5. 10. From bedside to bench and back : future options for antiretroviral drugs in non-B HIV-1 subtypes

    Author : Duncan Tazvinzwa Njenda; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : HIV-1 drug resistance remains a burden in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). Regardless of the advances in antiretroviral (ARV) therapy, there is an increase in the trend of acquired and pre-treatment drug resistance mutations (DRM) in LMIC affected by diverse HIV-1 subtypes.
