  1. 1. Hydropower Area Equivalents : Reduced Models for Efficient Simulation of Large-Scale Hydropower Systems

    Author : Evelin Blom; Lennart Söder; Arild Helseth; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Area Equivalent; Aggregation; Bilevel optimization; Large-scale hydropower; Power system simulation; Reduced model; Area-Ekvivalent; Aggregering; Två-nivå-optimering; Storskalig vattenkraft; Kraftsystemssimulering; Reducerad modell;

    Abstract : With over 4000 TWh yearly electricity production worldwide, hydropower plays an important role in many power systems. Unlike many other renewable energy sources, hydropower has a certain degree of controllability and high levels of flexibility over several time scales. READ MORE

  2. 2. Reading a glycocode - mechanism and function of galectin-glycan interactions

    Author : Emma Salomonsson; immunologi och glykobiologi - MIG Avdelningen för mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; galectin; specificity; affinity; multivalency; fluorescence anisotropy; glycan array; serum glycoproteins; anginex;

    Abstract : There is an intensive interest in characterising the structure and function of galectins, which is not surprising given their many important cellular functions and strong implications in human disease. Understanding the mechanisms involved in galectin functions will help to find selective and novel strategies for disease treatment and diagnosis. READ MORE

  3. 3. Structure and Function of HAMLET: Epitopes, Membrane Interactions and Molecular Recognition

    Author : Chin Shing Ho; immunologi och glykobiologi - MIG Avdelningen för mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : HAMLET (Human Alpha-lactalbumin Made LEthal to Tumor cells) is a complex of partially unfolded human alpha-lactalbumin and oleic acid that kills many different types of tumor cells and shows therapeutic efficacy in animal models and clinical studies. This thesis aims to (1) elucidate the structure of HAMLET and the exposure of biologically active domains, (2) define the contribution of lipids to the tumoricidal effect of HAMLET, (3) characterize the membranes response to HAMLET and the perturbation of membrane associated signaling cascades, (4) use proteomic screens to identify conserved features of HAMLET targets in tumor cells. 4. 4. Structure-function analysis of HAMLET (human alpha-lactalbumin made lethal to tumor cells)

    Author : Jenny Pettersson; immunologi och glykobiologi - MIG Avdelningen för mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; alpha-lactalbumin HAMLET oleic acid protein folding tumor cell death;

    Abstract : The human genome sequence encodes fewer proteins than expected, suggesting that one protein can have several functions and adjust their structure to meet different structural demands. Changes in tertiary structure have mostly been associated with disease and the most striking example is the prion protein, which changes from a mixed alpha-helical and beta-sheet conformation to the beta-sheet rich, disease causing iso-form. 5. 5. Mast cells and their progenitors in respiratory diseases : Understanding their connection to lung function and airway inflammation

    Author : P. Abigail Alvarado-Vazquez; Jenny Hallgren; Arne Egesten; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Mast cells; mast cell progenitors; pulmonary function test; allergic airway inflammation; experimental asthma model; Immunologi; Immunology;

    Abstract : Mast cells are rare immune cells involved in allergic diseases, including asthma. These cells are derived from mast cell progenitors (MCps) that migrate to the peripheral tissues via the blood in response to allergic or non-allergic stimuli. READ MORE
