  1. 1. Airway effects of diesel exhaust in healthy and asthmatic subjects

    Author : Charlotta Nordenhäll; Thomas Sandström; Ellinor Ädelroth; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; air pollution; diesel exhaust; airway responsiveness; airway inflammation; lung function; asthmatics; immunohistochemistry; bronchial epithelium;

    Abstract : Several epidemiological studies have revealed an association between particulate matter (PM) pollution and various health effects. Importantly, there is evidence to suggest that individuals with pre-existing respiratory disease, such as asthma, are more sensitive to elevated ground levels of particulate matter as compared to healthy subjects. 2. 2. Airway responses to NO2 and allergen in asthmatics

    Author : Charlotte Barck; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Air pollution; nitrogen dioxide; asthma; allergic inflammation; eosinophil cationic protein; neutrophilic cells; bronchoalevolar lavage; nasal lavage; induced sputum;

    Abstract : Nitrogen dioxide (N02), a gas produced by combustion, is a common environmental air pollutant. Individuals with asthma are more sensitive to N02 exposure than healthy subjects, according to results from controlled human-exposure studies. N02 can enhance the asthmatic response to inhaled allergen. READ MORE

  3. 3. Asthmatics as a susceptible population in health risk assessment of airborne chemicals

    Author : Mia Johansson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Asthma is a common chronic airway disease and about 235-300 million individuals of all ages are affected by the disease around the world. A precondition of asthma has been suggested to increase individual susceptibility to acute exposure from airborne irritant chemicals. READ MORE

  4. 4. Study of biomarkers for improved diagnosis and therapy monitoring in young asthmatics

    Author : Nikolaos Tsolakis; Kjell Alving; Lennart Nilsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Asthma phenotypes; IgE sensitization; atopy; cat allergen components; exhaled NO; airway hyper-responsiveness; lung function; asthma-related quality of life.;

    Abstract : Background: Type-2 asthma is often related to atopy and is characterized by elevated type-2 biomarkers. However, less is known about the pathophysiology of non-type 2 asthma, factors associated therewith, and the stability of different asthma phenotypes over time. READ MORE

  5. 5. Airway responsiveness and exhaled nitric oxide : Studies in asthma and Sjögren's syndrome

    Author : Dóra Lúðvíksdóttir; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; Airway hyperresponsiveness; nitric oxide; airway inflammation; Sjögren s syndrome; asthma; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Medicine; medicin;

    Abstract : In this thesis, four different types of provocation agents: methacholine, adenosine, cold air and mannitol were used to study different aspects of the airway responsiveness profile in asthma and Sjögren's syndrome. Exhaled nitric oxide (NO) and markers of eosinophil activation, serum eosinophil peroxidase (S-EPO) and eosinophil cationic protein (S-ECP) were measured. READ MORE
