  2. 2. From wolf to dog: Behavioural evolution during domestication

    Author : Christina Hansen Wheat; Hans Temrin; Clive Wynne; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Domestication syndrome; behavioural evolution; behaviorual ontogeny; correlated traits; sociability; playfulness; aggression; fear; Canis familiaris; Canis lupus; artificial selection; etologi; Ethology;

    Abstract : Biologists since Darwin have recognized that domestication, where species are selected to live in human-controlled environments, exerts strong selection on organisms and dramatically impacts their evolutionary trajectories. Across domesticated mammal species, characteristic morphological, physiological and behavioural changes occur simultaneously, as correlated traits, a phenomenon known as the domestication syndrome. 3. 3. Behavioural, physiological and morphological correlates of life-history in killifishes − a macroevolutionary approach

    Author : Simon Eckerström-Liedholm; Alejandro Gonzalez Voyer; Björn Rogell; Alastair Wilson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; brain size evolution; comparative analysis; life-history continuum; risk-taking behaviour; sexual selection; trade-offs; etologi; Ethology;

    Abstract : Life-histories commonly evolve along a continuum from short-lived and fecund, to long-lived and less fecund. Because life-history traits are mostly components of reproduction and survival, understanding the causes and consequences of life-history variation is at the core of evolutionary biology. READ MORE

  4. 4. Food choice in fallow deer – experimental studies of selectivity

    Author : Ulrika Alm Bergvall; Olof Leimar; Frederick D. Provenza; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; behavioural syndrome; neighbour contrast defence; neighbour contrast susceptibility; simultaneous negative contrast; plant secondary compounds; tannins; Ethology and behavioural ecology; Etologi och beteendeekologi; etologi; Ethology;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I experimentally investigate feeding selectivity in fallow deer (Dama dama), with respect to plant secondary compounds, especially tannins, which can decrease the quality of foods. I found that fallow deer avoided foods with higher amounts of tannic acid and Quebracho tannin, even though the deer ate some high-tannin food. READ MORE
