  1. 1. Benthic metabolism and sediment nitrogen cycling in Baltic sea coastal areas the role of eutrophication, hypoxia and bioturbation

    University dissertation from Department of Geological Sciences, Stockholm Univeristy

    Author : Stefano Bonaglia; Stockholms universitet.; [2012]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Eutrophication; Sediment; Benthic Flux; Nitrogen Cycle; Denitrification; Baltic Sea; Biogeochemistry; biogeokemi; marin- och brackvattensekologi; Marine and Brackish Water Ecology; marin ekologi; Marine Ecology; geokemi; Geochemistry;

    Abstract : Eutrophication is one of the greatest threats for the Baltic Sea, and one of its more critical consequences is bottom water hypoxia. Nutrient enrichment and oxygen-depletion affect both the deep central basins and a number of coastal areas, even though strategies for nutrient reduction have lately been implemented. READ MORE

  2. 2. Phosphorus recycling in brackish and marine environments - Sediment investigations in situ in the Baltic Sea and the By Fjord

    University dissertation from Department of Geological Sciences, Stockholm Univeristy

    Author : Lena Viktorsson; Göteborgs universitet.; Gothenburg University.; [2012]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; phosphorus; sediment; anoxia; Baltic Sea; By Fjord; benthic flux;

    Abstract : The phosphorus load to the oceans from land started to increase since around 1950 when man started to mine phosphorus-mineral from phosphorus-rich soils and bedrock. The increased use of phosphorus fertilizers in agriculture together with the growth of coastal cities increased the load of phosphorus to the coastal ocean where plankton production flourished. 3. 3. Benthic fluxes of biogenic elements in the Baltic Sea Influence of oxygen and macrofauna

    University dissertation from Stockholm : Department of Ecology, Environment and Plant Sciences, Stockholm University

    Author : Nils Ekeroth; Stockholms universitet.; [2015]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sediment biogeochemistry; Bioturbation; Benthic nutrient fluxes; Bottom water oxygenation; Box corer; Sediment sampling; marin ekologi; Marine Ecology;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates how benthic fluxes of phosphorus (P), nitrogen (N), and silicon (Si) change upon oxygenation of anoxic soft bottoms in the brackish, eutrophicated Baltic Sea. Direct measurements in situ by benthic landers demonstrated that fluxes of dissolved inorganic P (DIP) from anoxic bottom sediments in the Eastern Gotland Basin are higher than previously thought (Paper I). 4. 4. Suspension-feeding in the benthic boundary-layer: horizontal particle flux and mechanisms of particle capture

    University dissertation from Stockholm : Department of Ecology, Environment and Plant Sciences, Stockholm University

    Author : Örjan Karlsson; Göteborgs universitet.; Gothenburg University.; Göteborgs universitet.; Gothenburg University.; [2001]

  5. 5. Evaluating effects of low concentrations of oil in marine benthic communities

    University dissertation from Chalmers University of Technology

    Author : Fredrik J. Lindgren; Chalmers tekniska högskola.; Chalmers University of Technology.; [2015]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; oil; PAHs; meiofauna; microbial community; community response;

    Abstract : Large anthropogenic discharges of oil annually enter the marine environment, in the magnitude from large scale discharges to minor leakage, caused by ship collision accidents or seepage from urban areas. Possible detrimental environmental effects from these discharges differ, from acute lethal to chronic sub-lethal. READ MORE
