  1. 1. An Ultrafast Spectroscopic and Quantum-Chemical Study of the Photochemistry of Bilirubin : Initial Processes in the Phototherapy for Neonatal Jaundice

    Author : Burkhard Zietz; Tomas Gillbro; Jouko Korppi-Tommola; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bilirubin; Phototherapy; Neonatal Jaundice; Femtosecond Spectroscopy; CASSCF; TD-DFT; Isomerisation Dynamics; Biophysical chemistry; Biofysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : Bilirubin is a degradation product of haem, which is constantly formed in allmammals. Increased levels of bilirubin in humans lead to jaundice, a conditionthat is very common during the first days after birth. This neonataljaundice can routinely be treated by phototherapy without any serious sideeffects. READ MORE

  2. 2. Oxidants and antioxidants in cardiovascular disease

    Author : Kim Ekblom; Johan Hultdin; Stefan L Marklund; Lars Breimer; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; first-ever acute myocardial infarction; first-ever stroke; bilirubin; iron; HFE genotypes; UGT1A1*28; prospective; risk factor; Cardiovascular medicine; Kardiovaskulär medicin; Epidemiology; Epidemiologi; Clinical Chemistry; klinisk kemi;

    Abstract : Background Cardiovascular diseases, including myocardial infarction and stroke, are the main reason of death in Sweden and Western Europe. High iron stores are believed to produce oxygen radicals, which is the presumed putative mechanism behind lipid peroxidation, atherosclerosis and subsequent cardiovascular disease. READ MORE

  3. 3. Some factors in bilirubin transfer from brain to blood : experimental studies in rats and rabbits

  4. 4. Spectroelectrochemistry of Redox Enzymes

    Author : Andreas Christenson; Centrum för analys och syntes; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Elektrokemi; Electrochemistry; complex II; bilirubin oxidase; laccase; enzyme mechanism; redox potential; electron transfer; spectroelectrochemistry; redox enzymes; Spectroelectrochemical cell;

    Abstract : A low volume and long optical path spectroelectrochemical cell was constructed and tested in a number of applications such as detection of direct electron transfer (DET) between redox enzymes and gold electrodes, determination of the formal potentials of redox centres in proteins and enzymes, as well as mechanistic studies of heterogeneous and intermolecular electron transfer of copper oxidases and succinate:quinine oxidoreductase (Complex II). The existence of DET between enzymes and electrodes was demonstrated for theophylline oxidase, cytochrome P450 cam, laccase, bilirubin oxidase, sulphite oxidase and Complex II. READ MORE

  5. 5. Crohn's disease in Stockholm County : epidemiological panorama and associated gallstone disease

    Author : Annika Lapidus; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Bile acid; biliary lipids; bilirubin; cholesterol; colon; Crohn s disease; epidemiology; gallstone; ileal resection; incidence; prevalence; prognosis.;

    Abstract : Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease of obscure etiology, affecting any part of the gastrointestinal tract but the ileocaecal region in particular. The annual incidence has gradually been increasing, and the clinical pattern has changed; a shift towards colorectal involvement as well as an increasing number of elderly patients has been observed.
