1. DNA Interactions with Chiral Polyaza-aromatic Ruthenium(II) Complexes
Abstract : The binding to DNA of a series of chiral ruthenium complexes is studied with optical spectroscopy techniques, including isotropic absorption, linear dichroism (LD) and emission anisotropy as well as steady-state and time-resolved luminescence. The thesis focuses on the ìlight-switchî complex [Ru(phen)2dppz]2+ which binds to DNA by intercalation and luminesces when bound to DNA but not in pure buffer solution (phen=1,10-phenanthroline; dppz=dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine). 2. Polymer Gels: Modeling the Swelling Behavior
Abstract : This thesis is concerned with the swelling behavior of polyelectrolyte gels. The thesis can be divided into two parts. Part one deals with the modeling and computer simulation of the gel swelling. READ MORE

3. Surfactant Responsive Cross-Linked Polymer Hydrogels
Abstract : The focus of the thesis is on chemically cross-linked hydrogels which drastically change their volume when immersed in solutions of different ionic surfactants (with or without added salt). The two main questions addressed are: (1) How useful are simple gel swelling experiments to the study of polymer-surfactant interactions?, and (2) How does the volume of a cross-linked polymer gel change when it is immersed in a surfactant solution, both with respect to the equilibrium swelling and with respect to transient volume changes? Most of the gels studied were prepared by cross-linking linear polymers, which were well studied derivatives of hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC). READ MORE

4. Removal of Inorganic Anionic Pollutants from Water using Adsorption Technology
Abstract : In the era of urbanization, industrialization and population growth, groundwater and drinking water sources are getting adversely polluted due to the addition of different toxic contaminants including inorganic anionic pollutants. The inorganic anions are of serious concern due to their adverse health effects on humans, even when present at very low concentrations in water. READ MORE

5. Polymer Gels and their Interactions with Ionic Surfactants
Abstract : The response on chemically crosslinked gels and polymer solutions on the addition of ionic surfactants and/or addition of salt at different temperatures have been studied. All polymers studied are water soluble and slightly hydrophobic or hydrophobically modified. READ MORE
