  1. 1. Towards inclusion of Biodiversity in Life Cycle Assessment

    Author : Emke Vrasdonk; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Impact assessment; Biodiversity; LCA; eDNA; Life Cycle Assessment; Sustainability; Reference situation; Land Use; Biodiversity conservation; Metabarcoding; Indicators;

    Abstract : Biodiversity- crucial for ecosystem health and its products and services – is being lost at an alarming rate. While it is clear that human consumption is the main driving force of the considerable losses, conversion of natural habitats for production is continuing and the subsequent intensification of those systems is likely to cause even further biodiversity decay. 2. 2. Wooded or treeless pastures? : Linking policy, farmers' decisions and biodiversity

    Author : Simon Jakobsson; Regina Lindborg; Sara A O Cousins; Jan Plue; Tim Benton; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bat; biodiversity; bird; canopy cover; Common Agricultural Policy; European Union; farmer; functional diversity; germination; grassland; multi-taxa; pasture; plant; policy; seed sowing; tree density; trees; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Abstract : Worldwide, biodiversity conservation is one of the key challenges for a sustainable future of nature and society. It is particularly important to preserve high quality habitats within otherwise intensively managed agricultural landscapes. READ MORE

  3. 3. The Biodiversity of Hydrogenases in Frankia : Characterization, regulation and phylogeny

    Author : Melakeselam Leul Zerihun; Anita Sellstedt; Kornel Kovács; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biodiversity; Frankia; immunoblotting; gene expression; uptake hydrogenase; hydrogen-evolving hydrogenase; nickel; phylogeny; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : All the eighteen Frankia strains isolated from ten different actinorhizal host plants showed uptake hydrogenase activity. The activity of this enzyme is further increased by addition of nickel. Nickel also enhanced the degree of hydrogenase transfer into the membranes of Frankia, indicating the role of this metal in the processing of this enzyme. READ MORE

  4. 4. Tourism, Ecosystem Functions, and Human-Environmental Relations

    Author : Stefan Gössling; Institutionen för tjänstevetenskap; []

    Abstract : The thesis aims at deconstructing the sustainable tourism paradigm: can tourism be "a global strategy for sustainable development", as the tourist industry claims? And will developing countries in particular profit from tourism development?To most international organizations and institutions (from the World Wide Fund for Nature to The World Bank), tourism, if carefully managed, is a positive, sustainable development tool. However, the research presented in this thesis exposes this view as unrealistically optimistic for at least three reasons: first of all, global environmental change caused by tourism has never been investigated and integrated with the discourse on sustainable tourism development. 5. 5. Brazilian land use policies and the development of ecosystem services

    Author : Flavio L. M. Freitas; Ulla Mörtberg; Gerd Sparovek; Martin Persson; KTH; []

    Abstract : Concerns related to global environmental changes due to land use changes have been driving international communities towards more sustainable land use systems. Brazil is a country of global strategic importance in this matter considering that it is the nation with the largest extension of preserved tropical native vegetation, recognised for its ecosystem services and high and unique biodiversity.
