1. Hormone concentrations during pregnancy and maternal risk of epithelial ovarian cancer
Abstract : Background: The aim of this thesis was to study the relationship of pre-diagnostic circulating concentrations of sex steroid hormones (androgens, estradiol, 17-hydroxyprogesterone, and progesterone), growth factors (insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), placental growth hormone (GH)), sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), and anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) with risk of epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) overall, and by tumor invasiveness and histology. A longitudinal study was used to assess patterns of hormonal changes during a single pregnancy, and in two consecutive pregnancies. READ MORE

2. Genomic variation and molecular mechanisms of the host response to gastrointestinal nematodes in small ruminants
Abstract : Gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infections are one of the major constrains for sheep and goat production worldwide. One of the promising control strategies is the genetic selection for resistant animals as there are no issues due to anthelmintic resistance and it aligns to demands for chemical-free food. READ MORE

3. Digestion and metabolism of carbohydrates in fish
Abstract : This thesis deals with the digestion and metabolism of carbohydrates in Arctic charr, Eurasian perch and tilapia. Two sources of carbohydrates, native starch (wheat) and chitin (zygomycete biomass), were evaluated. Gut tissue of Arctic charr displayed significant chitinase activity, of both endo- and exo-chitinase forms. READ MORE

4. Development and evaluation of a subunit DIVA vaccine against bluetongue virus serotype 8 in cattle
Abstract : Bluetongue virus (BTV) causes the primarily vector-borne bluetongue disease of ruminants, which poses a permanent threat to Europe since new serotypes and strains are frequently introduced. Vaccination of cattle is essential to control BTV outbreaks. READ MORE

5. Equine trait mapping : from disease loci to the discovery of a major gene controlling vertebrate locomotion
Abstract : Assigning function to genes is essential for a better understanding of biological systems. To date, approximately half of the genes in the vertebrate genome have known function. Domestic animals are a rich source for trait mapping and in this thesis we have mapped three distinct equine phenotypes. READ MORE
