1. Concepts for compact solid-state lasers in the visible and UV
Abstract : In many fields, scientific or industrial, optical devices that can be tailored in terms of spectral qualities and output power depending on the application in question are attractive. Nonlinear optics in combination with powerful laser sources provide a tool to achieve essentially any wavelength in the electromagnetic spectrum, and the advancement of material technology during the last decade has opened up new possibilities in terms of realising such devices. 2. Optical Characterization and Optimization of Display Components : Some Applications to Liquid-Crystal-Based and Electrochromics-Based Devices
Abstract : This dissertation is focused on theoretical and experimental studies of optical properties of materials and multilayer structures composing liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and electrochromic (EC) devices. By applying spectroscopic ellipsometry, we have determined the optical constants of thin films of electrochromic tungsten oxide (WOx) and nickel oxide (NiOy), the films’ thickness and roughness. 3. Optical Investigations of Chiral Liquid Crystals
Abstract : Optical investigations of course involve experimental work, but a theoretical basis is also needed. The first chapter can hopefully can give the non-expert an insight into the science of liquid crystals. Liquid crystals are optically birefringent, and a review of the phenomenon of birefringence follows in chapter 2. READ MORE

4. All-Optical Switching with the Nonlinear Optical Loop Mirror
Abstract : This thesis deals with the theory and applications of the nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM). Novel methods to restore and filter optical data as well as generate high peak power optical pulses using the NOLM are demonstrated. READ MORE

5. Improvements for IceCube Event Reconstruction through Geometry Calibration and Photon Timing Distributions
Abstract : The origin of high-energy cosmic rays is an unsolved mystery because cosmic rays do not travel in a straight line but are bent by magnetic fields due to their electric charge. High energy neutrinos are predicted to be created close to these origins, and are an unambiguous probe, while gamma rays could be obscured or created by other processes. READ MORE
