1. Fluorescence studies of complex systems : organisation of biomolecules
Abstract : The homo and hetero dimerisation of two spectroscopically different chromophores were studied, namely: 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diazas-indacene (g-BODIPY) and its 5-styryl-derivative (r-BODIPY). Various spectroscopic properties of the r-BODIPY in different common solvents were determined. READ MORE

2. Development of benzoquinoquinoxaline derivatives as triplex-specific probes : Recognition of DNA structures at repeats sequences
Abstract : Repeat sequences are associated with several human diseases, such as Friedreich’s ataxia, polycystic kidney disease and cancer. These sequences can form non-B-DNA structures, including triplex (H-DNA) DNA, and are associated with genomic instability and altered gene expression. READ MORE

3. A Tale of Chaos and Colour Influencing the photophysical properties and glass forming abilities of BODIPY dyes via structural modification
Abstract : Organic dyes are everyday contributors in chemistry, physics and biology. BODIPY dyes were used as model dye class in this thesis. They are well-known for their versatility, which mainly originates from the tuneability of their photophysical properties upon changes in their molecular structure. READ MORE

4. Synthesis of substituted Ring-Fused 2-Pyridones and applications in chemical biology
Abstract : Antibiotics have been extensively used to treat bacterial infections since Alexander Fleming’s discovery of penicillin 1928. Disease causing microbes that have become resistant to antibiotic drug therapy are an increasing public health problem. READ MORE

5. On the quantitative analysis of electronic energy transfer/migration in proteins studied by fluorescence spectroscopy
Abstract : Two recently developed theories of electronic energy transfer/migration were for the first time applied to real protein systems for extracting molecular distances. The partial donor-donor energy migration (PDDEM) is an extension to the previously developed donor-donor energy migration (DDEM, F Bergström et al PNAS 96, 1999, 12477) which allows using chemically identical but photophysically different fluorophores in energy migration experiments.
