  1. 1. Train your brain : updating, transfer, and neural changes

    Author : Erika Dahlin; Lars Nyberg; Anna Stigsdotter Neely; Torkel Klingberg; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; cognitive training; executive functioning; transfer; fMRI; brain system; young adults; elderly; practice; neural correlates; individual differences; Experimental brain research; Experimentell hjärnforskning; Cognitive science; Kognitionsforskning; fysiologi; Physiology;

    Abstract : An initial aim of this thesis was to determine whether training of a specific executive function (updating) produces improvements in performance on trained and transfer tasks, and whether the effects are maintained over time. Neural systems underlying training and transfer effects were also investigated and one question considered is whether transfer depends on general or specific neural overlap between training and transfer tasks. 2. 2. Hybrid observers for systems with intrinsic pulse-modulated feedback

    Author : Diana Yamalova; Alexander Medvedev; Xiaoming Hu; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; hybrid systems; impulsive systems; biomedical systems; Goodwin s oscillator; observers; time-delay; Elektroteknik med inriktning mot reglerteknik; Electrical Engineering with specialization in Automatic Control;

    Abstract : Dynamical processes resulting from the interaction of continuous and discrete dynamics are often encountered in living organisms. Time evolutions of such processes constitute continuous variables that are subject to instant changes at discrete points of time. READ MORE

  3. 3. Aerobic fitness and healthy brain aging : cognition, brain structure, and dopamine

    Author : Lars Jonasson; Carl-Johan Boraxbekk; Katrine Riklund; Emrah Düzel; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Aerobic exercise; VO2; working memory; executive function; freesurfer; striatum; dopamine; D2-receptors; [11C]raclopride;

    Abstract : Background: Performing aerobic exercise and maintaining high levels of aerobic fitness may have positive effects on both brain structure and function in older adults. Despite decades of research however, there is still a rather poor understanding of the neurocognitive mechanisms explaining the positive effects of aerobic exercise on cognition. READ MORE
