  1. 1. Ergonomics of Breathing Apparatus, with Special Reference to Work of Breathing, Dead Space and Breathing Resistance

    Author : Dan E. Warkander; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; performance; control of breathing; static lung loading; work of breathing; breathing resistance; elastance; helium; hydrogen; hypercapnia; diving; CO2;

    Abstract : A breathing apparatus is a very useful device. It allows people to breathe relatively freely while entering environments that otherwise would be impenetrable such as extreme altitudes, smoke filled buildings, ocean depths and the surface of the moon. However, a breathing apparatus does have some disadvantages. READ MORE

  2. 2. Resistance breathing with PEP and CPAP : effects on respiratory parameters

    Author : Maria Sehlin; Ola Winsö; Karin Wadell; Fredrik Öhberg; Monika Fagevik Olsèn; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Chest physiotherapy; breathing exercises; PEP; CPAP; airway pressure; airflow; threshold resistor; flow resistor; inspiratory capacity; Borg CR10;

    Abstract : Background: Positive expiratory pressure (PEP) and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) are two forms of resistance breathing used in spontaneously breathing patients. With a threshold resistor or a flow resistor, both PEP and CPAP provide a positive (elevated) pressure level during the expiratory phase. READ MORE

  3. 3. Effects of Deep Breathing Exercises after Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery

    Author : Elisabeth Westerdahl; Arne Tenling; Göran Hedenstierna; Birgitta Lindmark; Anders Larsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Physical therapy; atelectasis; breathing exercises; coronary artery bypass; computed tomography; physiotherapy; postoperative care; postoperative complications; respiratory function tests; thoracic surgery; Sjukgymnastik; Physiotherapy; Sjukgymnastik fysioterapi;

    Abstract : Deep breathing exercises are widely used in the postoperative care to prevent or reduce pulmonary complications, but no scientific evidence for the efficacy has been found after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery. The aim of the thesis was to describe postoperative pulmonary function and to evaluate the efficacy of deep breathing exercises performed with or without a blow bottle device for positive expiratory pressure (PEP) 10 cmH2O or an inspiratory resistance-positive expiratory pressure (IR-PEP) mask with an inspiratory pressure of -5 cmH2O and an expiratory pressure of +10 to +15 cmH2O. 4. 4. Sleep disordered breathing and hemodynamic function

    Author : Ludger Grote; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : sleep apnea; hypertension; blood pressure; vascular function; exercise; arousal;

    Abstract : This thesis addresses the association between sleep disordered breathing (SDB) and hemodynamic function. A cross sectional study in a sleep laboratory cohort (n=1190) demonstrated a dose-response relationship between the severity of SDB, expressed as respiratory disturbance index (RDI), and office blood pressure, heart rate, and the risk of hypertension. 5. 5. Neurohormonal mechanisms in insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes

    Author : Stina Lindmark; Claes-Göran Östenson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Insulin resistance usually occurs early in the development of type 2 diabetes. An altered balance in the autonomic nervous system and in certain endocrine and inflammatory pathways, might contribute to the development of insulin resistance. READ MORE
