2. On starlings and farming: population decline, foraging strategies, cost of reproduction and breeding success
Abstract : The European Starling Sturnus vulgaris as many other farmland bird species has been declining during the last decades. The cause of these declines is generally believed to be changes with in agricultural methods affecting breeding and survival of birds. READ MORE

3. Breeding System Evolution and Pollination Success in the Wind-Pollinated Herb Plantago maritima
Abstract : In this thesis, I examined variation in sex expression and mating patterns in the sexually polymorphic, wind-pollinated herb Plantago maritima. With a combination of field studies, greenhouse experiments, and genetic analyses, I (a) examined factors influencing sex ratio variation in gynodioecious plants (in which hermaphrodites and females coexist), (b) discovered variation in breeding system, (c) investigated density-dependence of seed production, and (d) documented genetic variation within and among populations close to the northern range margin in Europe. 4. Advancing red clover breeding through genomic selection methods
Abstract : Red clover is a major forage legume and a highly valuable crop for Northern Europe due to its high protein value and multiple ecological services. It is an important crop for both the ruminant industry and ecological farming. As growing conditions change due to rapid climate change, the demand for red clover breeding has increased. READ MORE

5. Breeding for improved hip and elbow health in Swedish dogs
Abstract : Decades of selective breeding to reduce the prevalence of hip and elbow dysplasia(HD and ED) in Swedish dogs, based on phenotypic assessment of radiographic hip status, has had limited success. The prevalence of dysplastic dogs is still high in many large-sized and giant breeds and among the most common causes for euthanasia and costly veterinary care in numerous breeds are joint-related problems.
