  1. 1. Dispersal of bryophytes across landscapes

    Author : Niklas Lönnell; Kristoffer Hylander; Bengt Gunnar Jonsson; Sebastian Sundberg; Johan Ehrlén; Risto Virtanen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; anemochory; bryophytes; colonization; connectivity; diaspores; dispersal kernel; establishment; spore dispersal; long-distance dispersal; mechanistic model; mosses; realized dispersal; spore release; Lagrangian stochastic model; wind dispersal; Plant Ecology; växtekologi;

    Abstract : Dispersal, especially long-distance dispersal, is an important component in many disciplines within biology. Many species are passively dispersed by wind, not least spore-dispersed organisms.In this thesis I investigated the dispersal capacity of bryophytes by studying the colonization patterns from local scales (100 m) to landscape scales (20 km). 3. 3. Mosses as mediators of climate change : implications for tree seedling establishment in the tundra

    Author : Signe Lett; Ellen Dorrepaal; David Wardle; Marie-Charlotte Nilsson; Vigdis Vandvik; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; arctic; alpine; B. pubescens; bryophytes; competition; facilitation; mosses; P. sylvestris; precipitation changes; seedlings; traits; tree line; warming;

    Abstract : Alpine and arctic tree line expansion depends on the establishment of tree seedlings above the current tree line, which is expected to occur with climate warming. However, tree lines often fail to respond to higher temperatures. Other environmental factors are therefore likely important for tree seedling establishment. READ MORE

  4. 4. From pattern to process : Studies on limestone grassland, with emphasis on the bryophyte-lichen layer and its effects on vascular plants

    Author : Manuela Zamfir; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; Alvar; Bryophytes; Carousel model; Community structure; Competition; Dynanmics; Interactions; Lichens; PASFRAN; pattern analysis; Sweden; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Abstract : Patterns in space and time at different scales in the bryophyte-lichen layer, aud multi-species spatial patterns of bryophytes, lichens and vascular plants were studied in Avenetum limestone grassland on the Great Alvar of the Baltic Island of Öland, south-eastem Sweden.Spatiotemporal patterns of bryophytes and Iichens in grazed and ungrazed alvar grassland demonstrated that dominant species forming large patches were relatively stable in time, whereas less frequent species forming small patches were more mobile. 5. 5. The role of microclimate for the performance and distribution of forest plants

    Author : C. Johan Dahlberg; Kristoffer Hylander; Johan Ehrlén; Jason D. Fridley; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; performance; microclimate; spatial scales; continental; landscape; distribution patterns; distribution limits; phenology; vegetative development; reproductive development; vital rates; population growth rate; vascular plants; bryophytes; distribution modelling; Plant Ecology; växtekologi;

    Abstract : Microclimatic gradients may have large influence on individual vital rates and population growth rates of species, and limit their distributions. Therefore, I focused on the influence of microclimate on individual performance and distribution of species. READ MORE
