  1. 1. Dissecting the Microenvironment of Urothelial Bladder Cancer : Therapy, Modelling and Biomarkers

    Author : Iliana Kyriaki Kerzeli; Sara Mangsbo; Tania de Gruijl; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Immuno-oncology; Tumor immunology; MALT1 inhibition; Urothelial bladder cancer; Tumor microenvironment; Immunologi; Immunology; Oncology; Onkologi; Urologi; Urology;

    Abstract : The complexity of the tumor microenvironment (TME) impacts therapy responses and the survival of cancer patients. The scope of this thesis is to study the effects of immune modulation on tumor-infiltrating leukocytes, and to explore the TME of urothelial cancer to provide the research society with new knowledge and potential therapeutic targets. 2. 2. Molecular mechanisms of nerve-tumor interactions : the intersection of cancer and neurodevelopment

    Author : Luz Maria Gonzalez-Castrillon; Sara I Wilson; Daniel Öhlund; Nisha D’Silva; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Perineural invasion; cancer; PDAC; axonogenesis; neurodevelopment; spinal cord; axon guidance; bioinformatics.; biomedical laboratory science; biomedicinsk laboratorievetenskap;

    Abstract : A wide range of cancers throughout the body are characterized by high nerve density and invasion of cancer cells within the nerves, a process called perineural invasion (PNI). Work in the field has shown that blocking nerves in organs with tumors leads to improved disease outcomes suggesting that finding ways to block tumor nerves could lead to new treatment approaches. 3. 3. Quiescent cancer cells : Three-dimensional cell models for evaluation of new therapeutics

    Author : Frida Ek; Mårten Fryknäs; Malin Jarvius; Rolf Larsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cancer; cancer cell quiescence; dormancy; three-dimensional; multicellular tumor spheroids; model development; cancer pharmacology; mitochondria; OXPHOS; colorectal carcinoma; hepatocellular carcinoma; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : Inadequate metabolic conditions in solid tumors lead to the formation of quiescent cancer cells that are suspended in a transient cell cycle arrest. When conditions change, quiescent cancer cells can re-enter the cell cycle and cause recurrence. READ MORE

  4. 4. Cancer and Inflammation : Role of Macrophages and Monocytes

    Author : Alexander Hedbrant; Jonny Wijkander; Dick Delbro; Ann Erlandsson; Anita Sjölander; Karlstads universitet; []

    Abstract : Macrophages are cells of the innate immune system that can be found in large quantities in cancer tumors and affect cancer progression by regulating growth and invasiveness of cancer cells. There are two main phenotypes of macrophages denoted M1 and M2. READ MORE

  5. 5. Adenovirus for Cancer Therapy : With a Focus on its Surface Modification

    Author : Di Yu; Magnus Essand; Dirk Nettelbeck; Uppsala universitet; []

    Abstract : Adenovirus serotype 5 (Ad5) is widely used as an oncolytic agent for cancer therapy. However, its infectivity is highly dependent on the expression level of coxsackievirus-adenovirus receptor (CAR) on the surface of tumor cells. READ MORE
