  1. 1. Screening for Candidate Brain Tumor Genes : Identifying Genes that Cooperate with Platelet-Derived Growth Factor in Glioma Development and Progression

    Author : Fredrik Johansson; Bengt Westermark; Leif Carlsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Pathology; PDGF; insertional mutagenesis; retroviral tagging; common insertion site; glioma; expression; cGMP-dependent protein kinase II; Patologi;

    Abstract : Malignant primary brain tumors, gliomas, often overexpress both platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) ligands and receptors providing an autocrine and/or paracrine boost to tumor growth. Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most frequent glioma. Its aggressive and infiltrative growth renders it extremely difficult to treat. READ MORE

  2. 2. Identification of Candidate Genes in Four Human Disorders

    Author : Malin Melin; Niklas Dahl; Anders Isaksson; Juha Kere; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Genetics; Ichthyosis; Leukodystrophy; Kostmann disease; Autism; Genetic disorders; Candidate gene; Genetik;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis has been to identify genes and gene regions underlying four different disorders. In papers I-IV, positional cloning methods, such as linkage, association and haplotype analysis have been used for the identification of genomic regions associated with the ichthyosis prematurity syndrome (IPS), adult-onset autosomal dominant leukodystrophy (ADLD) and Kostmann disease. 3. 3. Candidate Genes for Late Diabetic Complications

    Author : Eero Lindholm; diabetes och endokrinologi Genomik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; TNF; sekretion; LTA; Endocrinology; nephropathy; diabetes mellitus; retinopathy; neuropathy; genetic; UCP; diabetologi; AGER; MHc2TA; HLA-DQB1; Endokrinologi; secreting systems; diabetology;

    Abstract : Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. The new WHO criteria for classification of diabetes takes into account also clinical stages dividing the diabetic patients into noninsulin requiring (NIR), insulin requiring for control (IRC) and insulin requiring for survival (IRS) subgroups. 4. 4. Genetic Risk Factors for Systemic Lupus Erythematosus : From Candidate Genes to Functional Variants

    Author : Anna-Karin Abelson; Marta Alarcón-Riquelme; Holger Luthman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Systemic Lupus Erythematosus; SLE; association study; complex disease; genetic; Medical genetics; Medicinsk genetik;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis has been to identify genetic variants that increase the susceptibility for Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), an autoimmune disease caused by a complex interplay between various genetic and environmental factors. Five different candidate genes were selected through different strategies, and were analysed for association with SLE in an attempt to distinguish some of the underlying mechanisms of this disease. 5. 5. Genes to remember : imaging genetics of hippocampus-based memory functions

    Author : Karolina Kauppi; Lars Nyberg; Jonas Persson; Guillén Fernández; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Imaging genetics; fMRI; Episodic memory; SNP; KIBRA; BDNF; APOE; Hippocampus; Parahippocampus;

    Abstract : In the field of imaging genetics, brain function and structure are used as intermediate phenotypes between genes and cognition/diseases to validate and extend findings from behavioral genetics. In this thesis, three of the strongest candidate genes for episodic memory, KIBRA, BDNF, and APOE, were examined in relation to memory performance and hippocampal/parahippocampal fMRI blood-oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) signal.
