1. Exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation, physical fitness, and physical activity in cardiac disease
Abstract : Background: Evidence suggests that individualised exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation should be offered to patients with ischemic heart disease and chronic heart failure (HF) because it improves physical fitness and health-related quality of life (HR-QoL), and reduces cardiac mortality and hospital admissions. If physiotherapist-led exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation (PT-X) can similarly improve physical fitness in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), and improve physical activity levels in patients with chronic HF or permanent AF, has been sparsely studied. 2. Physical exercise for older people : focusing on people living in residential care facilities and people with dementia
Abstract : The main purposes of this thesis were to evaluate a high-intensity functional weight-bearing exercise programme, regarding its applicability (attendance, achieved intensity, adverse events) as well as its effect on physical functions and activities of daily living (ADL) among older people living in residential care facilities, with a special focus on people with dementia. Furthermore, a main purpose was to systematically review the applicability and effects of physical exercise on physical functions, cognitive functions, and ADL among people with dementia. READ MORE

3. Physical Activity and Cardiovascular Disease
Abstract : The aim was to investigate associations of fitness and types and levels of physical activity with subsequent risk of cardiovascular disease.Four large-scale longitudinal cohort studies were used. The exposures were different measures related to physical activity and the outcomes were obtained through linkage to the Swedish In-Patient Register. READ MORE

4. Community-based osteoporosis prevention: Physical activity in relation to bone density, fall prevention, and the effect of training programmes : The Vadstena Osteoporosis Prevention Project
Abstract : This thesis is based on studies of the ten-year community-based intervention programme entitled, the Vadstena Osteoporosis Prevention Project (VOPP). The specific aims of the research were to describe the effects of physical activity and training programmes on bone mass and balance performance in adults, to determine whether a fall risk prevention programme could motivate personal actions among the elderly, to ascertain whether the intervention programme could reduce the incidence of forearm and hip fractures. 5. Depression in older people with and without dementia : non-pharmacological interventions and associations between psychotropic drugs and mortality
Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to investigate associations between psychotropic drug use and death, associations between functional capacity, dependency in ADL and depression, and to evaluate a non-pharmacological intervention to reduce depressive symptoms, among older people with and without dementia. There is limited knowledge about the risk of death associated with psychotropic drug use among those aged ≥85 years, those with dementia, or those living in residential care facilities; groups that have a higher intake of psychotropic drugs and who are also more prone to adverse drug reactions.
