1. Carbohydrate-Functionalized Nanomaterials : Synthesis, Characterization and Biorecognition Studies
Abstract : This thesis focuses on the development of carbohydrate coupling chemistry on nanomaterials and their biological activity studies. It is divided into two parts:In part one, two carbohydrate immobilization approaches, based on perfluorophenyl azide (PFPA)-functionalized silica nanoparticles (SNPs), are presented, where the binding affinity of the glyconanoparticles was evaluated through carbohydrate-lectin interaction. 2. Glycoconjugates : synthesis and investigation of carbohydrate-protein interactions
Abstract : To study the functions of glycoconjugates in biological systems reliable and efficient protocols for glycoconjugate synthesis are needed. To reach this goal we have developed methods for solid-phase synthesis of glycoconjugates that can be monitored with gel-phase 19F spectroscopy using fluorinated linkers, building blocks, and protecting groups. 3. Efficient carbohydrate synthesis by controlled inversion strategies
Abstract : The Lattrell-Dax method of nitrite-mediated substitution of carbohydrate triflates is an efficient method to generate structures of inverse configuration. In this study it has been demonstrated that a neighboring equatorial ester group plays a highly important role in this carbohydrate epimerization reaction, inducing the formation of inversion compounds in good yields. 4. Synthesis of Carbohydrate Mimics and Development of a Carbohydrate Epimerisation Method
Abstract : In this thesis the synthesis of several hydrolytically stable carbohydrate mimics with the potential to function as glycosidase or lectin inhibitors are described. This work is presented in Chapters 2-5. READ MORE

5. Synthesis of Oligosaccharides from the Inner Core Structure of Haemophilus Influenzae and Neisseria meningitidis Lipopolysaccharides
Abstract : This thesis describes the synthesis of oligosaccharides corresponding to different parts of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) inner core structure from Haemophilus influenzae and Neisseria meningitidis. Chapter 2 describes the synthesis of a protected trisaccharide common to H. influenzae and N. READ MORE
