  1. 1. Transpulmonary pressure during mechanical ventilation

    Author : Christina Grivans; Göteborgs universitet.; University of Gothenburg.; [2013]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Mechanical ventilation; Acute lung injury; Acute respiratory distress syndrome; Lung volume measurements; Electric Impedance diagnostic use; Lung elastance; Transpulmonary pressure; Esophageal pressure;

    Abstract : Background: Mechanical ventilation can aggravate lung injury by repetitive opening and closing of lung units, overdistention and undue pressure on pulmonary structures. Guidelines exist for lung protective ventilation, but individualized ventilator settings, based on partitioning of respiratory mechanics in pulmonary and chest wall complex components, would be beneficial. 2. 2. Sedation during mechanical ventilation in intensive care - Sedation practices and patients' memories, stressful experiences and psychological distress

    University dissertation from Division of Nursing, Faculty of Medicine, Lund University

    Author : Karin Samuelson; Lunds universitet.; Lund University.; [2006]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Mechanical ventilation; Intensive care unit; Patient comfort; intensive care; Anaesthesiology; intensivvård; Anestesiologi; Sedation; Respiratory nursing;

    Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis was to describe and determine intensive care sedation in adult mechanically ventilated patients with the emphasis on patients? memory, stressful experiences and psychological distress. The results are based on a nationwide postal survey (Paper I) including 89 Swedish intensive care units (ICUs) followed by a prospective cohort study (Papers II?IV) conducted over 18 months in 2 ICUs including 313 mechanically ventilated adults admitted for more than 24 hours. 3. 3. Spirodynamics. New methods for continuous monitoring of respiratory mechanics in ventilator-treated patients

    University dissertation from Division of Nursing, Faculty of Medicine, Lund University

    Author : Sigurbergur Kárason; Göteborgs universitet.; University of Gothenburg.; [2000]
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; Anaesthetics and intensive care; Medicinsk teknik; Medical engineering; Monitoring; Respiratory mechanics; Mechanical ventilation; Compliance; Alveolar pressure; Dynostatic algorithm; ALI; ARDS; Model; Human.;

    Abstract : Introduction: Ventilator treatment is often life-saving but has the inherent risk of causing damage to lung tissues. Overdistension and repetitive collapsing/opening of alveoli should be avoided. Monitoring of respiratory mechanics has a central role in accomplishing this. READ MORE

  4. 4. The challenge of communication during home mechanical ventilation

    University dissertation from Division of Nursing, Faculty of Medicine, Lund University

    Author : Katja Laakso; Göteborgs universitet.; University of Gothenburg.; [2011]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN; MEDICINE; Communication; Communicative partner; Health-related quality of life; Home mechanical ventilation; International Classification of Functioning; Disability and Health; Qualitative research design; Disability and Health;

    Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis was to explore and describe experience of communication during home mechanical ventilation (HMV) in adults, thereby contributing to increased knowledge and awareness of issues related to ventilator-supported communication. Mechanical ventilatory support seriously affects speaking and communication. READ MORE

  5. 5. The Intensive Care Unit syndrome/delirium, patients' perspective and clinical signs

    University dissertation from Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care, Lund

    Author : Anetth Granberg Axèll; Lunds universitet.; Lund University.; [2001]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; delirium; intensive care; ICU-syndrome; acute confusion; psychosis; critical care; experiences; sleep-deprivation; sensory overload; sensory underload; Anaesthesiology; environment.; Anestesiologi; intensivvård;

    Abstract : When a person becomes critically ill, injured and/or undergoes major surgery and requires intensive care, a complex dilemma can arise. The condition of the illness, the specific caring situation and the environment lead to significant changes and effects in the senses and perceptional abilities. READ MORE
