  1. 1. On HIV-1 latency and viral reservoirs

    Author : Tomas Mellberg; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; HIV-1; Latency; Intravenous immunoglobulin; residual viremia; low level viremia; Ultrasensitive PCR methods; Central nervous system;

    Abstract : HIV-1 establishes a latent infection that is inaccessible to treatment in cellular and anatomical reservoirs. This thesis concerns several problematic issues of HIV-1 persistence, including ways to measure and monitor both the virus at low viral concentrations and the depletion of the reservoir. READ MORE

  2. 2. HIV Patient Monitoring Framework Through Knowledge Engineering

    Author : Charles Otine; Blekinge Tekniska Högskola; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Action Research; Antiretroviral therapy ART ; AIDS; Classification; Databases; Data Mining; Data Warehousing; Health; ICT; IT; HIV; Open Source; Knowledge Discovery; Knowledge Engineering; Machine Learning; Regression;

    Abstract : Uganda has registered more than a million deaths since the HIV virus was first offi¬cially reported in the country over 3 decades ago. The governments in partnership with different groups have implemented different programmes to address the epidemic. READ MORE

  3. 3. Viral and host determinants in hepatitis B

    Author : Hossein Sendi; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The outcome of hepatitis B infection is highly variable, ranging from acute disease resulting in the elimination of infection to persistent infection that can lead to cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma. The factors determining the outcome in an individual are not fully known but may be classified into viral and host factors. READ MORE

  4. 4. Behavioral and Biological Factors Related to HIV Transmission among Female Sex Workers in Ethiopia

    Author : Minilik Demissie Amogne; Socialmedicin och global hälsa; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; FSW; HIV; Violence; HED; condom failure; Treatment failure; Drug resistance; Experience; PrEP challenge; Ethiopia;

    Abstract : Due to legal, cultural, and social factors, female sex workers (FSWs) experience anelevated level of violence, heavy alcohol consumption, and sexual abuse. Theseindividual and societal factors create a web of vulnerabilities that facilitate thespread of HIV within this population group. READ MORE

  5. 5. Studies on Potency and breadth of HIV-1, HIV-2 and SIV neutralizing antibody responses

    Author : Gülsen Özkaya Sahin; Avdelningen för medicinsk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; HIV-1; HIV-2; SIV; envelope; neutralizing antibody; breadth; potency; IgG; IgA; complement; antibody-dependent complement-mediated inactivation; virus evolution; diversity; divergence;

    Abstract : Even though the relative contribution of neutralizing antibodies (Nab) to prevent progression to AIDS during HIV-1 infection is still unclear, the induction of broadly NAb directed against HIV-1 through vaccination is considered to represent an important goal for the development of HIV-1 vaccines. Factors contributing to the induction of NAb may include the strength and duration of antigenic stimulation, the preservation of CD4+ T and B cells, the conformation of the HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein complex (Env), and the evolution of Env during infection.
