  1. 1. Sperm Membrane Channels, Receptors and Kinematics : Using boar spermatozoa for drug toxicity screening

    Author : Alejandro Vicente Carrillo; Heriberto Rodríguez-Martínez; Karl-Eric Magnusson; Rudolf Rigler; Vesa Loitto; Stefan Arver; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Plasma membrane; membrane channels; membrane receptors; kinematics; 3Rprinciples; spermatozoa; boar.;

    Abstract : Internal fertilization usually implies that a spermatozoon, with intact attributes for zygote formation, passes all hurdles during its transport through the female genitalia and reaches the oocyte. During this journey, millions to billions of other spermatozoa perish. READ MORE

  2. 2. Exploring the Interplay of Lipids and Membrane Proteins

    Author : Candan Ariöz; Åke Wieslander; Daniel O. Daley; Malcolm East; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Membrane lipids; membrane proteins; anionic lipids; membrane remodeling; intracellular vesicles; model membrane systems; glycosyltransferase; Escherichia coli; lipid composition; fatty acid modification; membrane curvature; bacterial homeoviscous adaptation; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Abstract : The interplay between lipids and membrane proteins is known to affect membrane protein topology and thus have significant effect (control) on their functions. In this PhD thesis, the influence of lipids on the membrane protein function was studied using three different membrane protein models. READ MORE

  3. 3. Cholesterol in T cells : homeostasis, plasma membrane organization and signaling

    Author : Saleemulla Mahammad; Ingela Parmryd; Thomas Harder; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Plasma membrane; T cells; Cholesterol; Lipid rafts; Membrane organization; Cholesterol homeostasis; cholesteryl esters; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; Cell Biology; cellbiologi;

    Abstract : The plasma membrane of eukaryotic cells contains cholesterol and glycosphingolipids enriched nanodomains known as lipid rafts; which are believed to exist in a liquid ordered (lo) state. Methyl-beta-cyclodextrin (MBCD) is used to deplete cellular cholesterol and a widespread assumption is that MBCD preferentially targets cholesterol in lipid rafts. READ MORE

  4. 4. Unique Solutions to Universal Problems : Studies of the Archaeal Cell

    Author : Erik A. Pelve; Rolf Bernander; Sonja Verena Albers; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Archaea; Cdv; Cell cycle; Cell division; Cell lysis; Crenarchaea; ESCRT-III; Flow cytometry; Microarray; Microscopy; Nitrosopumilus; SIRV2; Sulfolobus; Thaumarchaea; Transcription; VAP; Virus; Biology with specialization in Molecular Evolution; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär evolution;

    Abstract : Archaea is one of the three domains of life and studies of archaeal biology are important for understanding of life in extreme environments, fundamental biogeochemical processes, the origin of life, the eukaryotic cell and their own, unique biology. This thesis presents four studies of the archaeal cell, using the extremophilic Sulfolobus and ocean living Nitrosopumilus as model systems. READ MORE

  5. 5. Epac2 signaling at the β-cell plasma membrane

    Author : Ida Alenkvist; Anders Tengholm; Olga Göransson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; β-cell; insulin secretion; cAMP; Ca2 ; Epac; Rap; exocytosis; sulfonylurea; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Secretion of appropriate amounts of insulin from pancreatic β-cells is crucial for glucose homeostasis. The β-cells release insulin in response to glucose and other nutrients, hormones and neurotransmitters, which trigger intracellular signaling cascades, that result in exocytotic fusion of insulin-containing vesicles with the plasma membrane.
